Orosi High soccer coach Jose Quevedo knew the Cardinals were up for a big non-league match at home against Reedley High School.
The Pirates (5-2-1), who are the defending section Division 2 champions, notched their third straight win in shutout fashion in a 1-0 win over OHS Monday night.
The Cardinals fall to 3-4-3 overall heading into a league match at Parlier Tuesday. Results of the match was unavailable at press time.
“It was a good match,” Quevedo said. “They are pretty good.”
After a scoreless first half, Reedley broke through on a direct kick while keeping Orosi scoreless.
“We had a few chances to score at the end of the match,” Quevedo said. “It was just one of those days.”
Quevedo said that he was missing three starters who were hurt during the Jim Inglis Soccer Classic in Lemoore over the weekend, but is not using that as an excuse.
“We have players who can step up and play,” Quevedo said.
Orosi wrapped up the tourney placing third in the Silver Division. The Cardinals’ final match was against Mission Oak. After going scoreless in regulation, the Hawks ended up prevailing on penalty kicks, 3-2.
The Cardinals began the final day of play with a 3-0 win over Coalinga. Aiden Rodriguez, Antonio Lupian and Kevin Guerrero each scored goals.
On Friday, El Diamante avenged an earlier season loss defeating Orosi, 2-1. The lone goal came off an assist from Lupian to Luis Corona. The Cardinals rolled in their tournament opener blanking Fresno Christian, 3-0. Corona scored twice including a penalty kick, and David Pina scored on an assist from Rodriguez.
Last Tuesday against Riverdale, the Cardinals lost a close 3-2 match in a West Sequoia League opener for both teams.
Ezequiel Zapien assisted on a goal by Eliseo Pina and Lupian also scored a goal for OHS.
The Cardinals will open the Clovis Tournament on Friday against the host Cougars.
