For the last six years, there have been tenta-
tive plans circulating to add an allopathic medical school to the University of California, Merced. The campus is ready for it, but lacks initial funding.
Medical schools in California have over 100 medical students in their classes. University of California in San Francisco had 145 matriculated students in 2017.
If there were medical schools in the Central Valley and they graduated as many doctors as other
schools do, the physician shortage could subside. The state of California should allocate specific
funding to UC Merced for its medical school. Bringing new doctors to Central California will
improve the quality of life for its residents.
Who knows the problems of Central California
better than the future doctors who were raised here?

Two Fresno State alumni
will be presented with the Bold Visionary Legacy Award.
Frances Peña-Olgin, a Fresno State alumna who earned her bachelor’s in criminology in 1976 and a master’s in social work in 1979, retired as director of University Outreach and Recruitment in 2015. She was also instrumental in the cre- ation of the Outreach Dream Center for DACA students. Peña-Olgin was also a mem- ber of the planning commit- tee that founded the Chicano\
Latino Commencement Cel- ebration and planned it for 17 years.
Raúl Z. Moreno graduated with a bachelor’s in Spanish in 1984 and a master’s in applied linguistics in 1987, despite the challenges he overcame as a migrant field worker. Moreno dedicated his career to assisting other migrant students in reaching their academic and profes- sional potential. In 1987, he was part of the team that cre- ated the University Migrant Services program at Fresno State.
A record 1,075 applica- tions for the class of 2018 cel- ebration have been received, said Dr. Victor Torres, coordi- nator of the celebration. He said it is the largest Latino commencement celebration in the nation, with attendance last year reaching peak ca- pacity of just under 14,000.
