Evelyn Delia (Pearson) Nelson
1920 - 2021
Evelyn Nelson, beloved matriarch of the extended Nelson family,
passed away on January 21st, 2021, after a full and blessed
life. Evelyn was born on June 18, 1920, to Swedish
farmers Albin Pearson and Helen Nelson in Stock- holm, Wisconsin. Her early life was characterized
by milking cows and farm chores, attending Sabylund
Lutheran Church, and later earning a teaching certificate.
God had other adventurous plans for Evelyn when a Lutheran
preacher from Idaho, Donald Nelson, swept her off her feet with his smooth tenor voice and big
plans to serve overseas as a Chinese missionary. They were married June 13, 1944, in a simple country ceremony sur- rounded by loved ones.
Days after Don’s ordination and their wedding, the newly- weds packed their bags for what would be the next 40 years of service throughout Asia. With support from Lutheran World Missions, they worked tirelessly to spread peace, goodwill, and relay the good news of Jesus Christ through- out China and beyond. Evelyn taught Sunday School, raised funds for the poor and ill, supported Don’s work as a semi- nary professor, and served in various mission projects – all in addition to mothering five children.
In 1983, Don and Evelyn retired from mission work and settled in Reedley, California. She was an active member at Christ Lutheran Church in Reedley, serving on ministries such as the altar guild and fellowship. She organized rum- mage sales and other projects to benefit Reedley through the Study and Civic Club. Gardening with her husband at Reedley College community garden brought many years of happiness and endless baskets of tomatoes. She selflessly donated her time and money to many charities, particu- larly typing Bibles and other literature into braille for the blind. After Don passed away in 2011, Evelyn moved to the Sierra View Retirement Homes where she continued to find friendship and community. Her family especially wants to thank her caregivers who companioned her with excellent care, comfort, and bouquets of flowers.
She is predeceased by her cherished husband of 67 years, Reverend Donald O. Nelson (2011), her parents and four siblings, and her two grandsons Aaron Nelson (2007) and Jaime Nelson (2020). She is survived by her two brothers, Jim and Glenn Pearson, her five children - Ardie, Marilyn, Carol, Phil, and Chris, numerous nieces and nephews, 20 grandchildren, and 20+ great-grandchildren.
Evelyn will be remembered for her gentle faithfulness, wis- dom, and unconditional love that she showered on every- one. Her kindness and compassion were a supreme example of God’s love to all who knew her. She will be missed for the way she knit together her family through faith and tradi- tions. Evelyn saw the world change drastically in her 100 years on Earth, but her beliefs never wavered. She leaves behind a legacy of goodness pointing toward Him that inspires us all.
A celebration of life service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Reedley on May 20 at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flow- ers, donations in Evelyn’s memory may be made to Christ Lutheran Church Reedley or Sierra View Homes.
