Musica
Viva sets
concert
for May 15
Contributed
Musica Viva will present their final concert of the 2017-18 sea- son in Reedley on Tuesday, May 15, with a program entitled “Trio con Basso.”
The concert – which is free – will start at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Mennonite Church, at 12th and L streets. The community is invited to attend.
Susan Doering, on violin and viola, and Dieter Wulfhorst, on violoncello, will be joined by Heidi Franklin on double bass. Many concertgoers will recognize Franklin as a core musician of the Fresno Philharmonic.
For years, Doering and Wulf- horst have talked about playing a set of Musica Viva concerts with friend and colleague Franklin.
The program will include a trio selection composed by Jean-Bap- tiste Bréval, a trio by Leopold Mo- zart, and works by lesser known but talented composers such as Josef Myslivecek and Gioachino Rossini.

The city of Reedley is looking for teens to serve on the Communi- ty Services Commission and to be involved in this summer’s Junior Leader Program.
The application period is open through the month of May.
Applications for both pro- grams are available at the Reedley Community Center office, 100 N. East Ave.
Here is more information about both programs:
• Community Services Com- mission Youth Representatives – These positions (typically two) serve on the commission with the adult members. Those chosen will serve from June 2018 to June 2019.
The posts are open to students who attend a high school in Reed- ley, such as Reedley High School, Immanuel High School or Reedley Middle College High School.
The commission looks for stu- dents who possess leadership skills and want to be involved in commu- nity activities.
The young representatives will be expected to attend the commis- sion’s regular meetings, report to the commission with information and feedback, and volunteer at three to four events held by the Reedley Community Services De- partment.
• Junior Leader Program – These positions are open to young people ages 13 to 16. They will assist paid staff members in the city’s Summer Day Camp pro- grams.
The Summer Day Camp will run June 18 to Aug. 3.
For more information about the Community Services Commis- sion posts or the Junior Leader Program, call the Reedley Com- munity Services Department at (559) 637-4203.

Reedley High School’s first-ever College Signing Day was an event that senior Jacklyn Avila and her parents said they will forever trea- sure as part of Jacklyn’s graduation memories.
No doubt, many of the 65 or so seniors and their families at the April 30 occasion felt the same way. The event, similar to thousands of College Signing Days held across the country, celebrated seniors who have chosen to continue their edu- cations at four-year universities and colleges.
“It makes me feel more proud that I'm actually going to a university. It's really nice."
– RHS senior Jacklyn Avila about College Signing Day
Hector Chapa Jr., the RHS coun- selor who has worked with the Class of 2018 since they were freshmen, said before the ceremony: “I am just so excited for them and their accom- plishments. A lot of them have met the rigors and expectations to fulfill all the requirements for their col- leges.
“They’ve done a great job.”
Sebastian Villasenor, a director with the Student Transition Program, had initially talked to Chapa about organizing this first-time RHS event for seniors heading to four-year in- stitutions: “It’s just a celebration of their hard work.”
Jacklyn said she will attend Fres- no Pacific University, where she will major in communications and minor in music performance.
She said she didn’t expect such a fine event, which included a dinner just outside the campus Performing

The 2018 Pet and Storybook Parade

This year’s edition of the long-running Reedley Pet and Sto- rybook Parade attracted newcomers like the Thonesen children – 6-year-old Grace, 3-year-old Rebecca, and 2-year-old Isaiah.
You couldn’t miss them – they wore simple but brightly col- ored costumes reflecting one of their favorite stories, “Dragons Love Tacos.” Rebecca was in purple, Isaiah in green and Grace in pink. Their mother, Charity, said her children adore the book about dragons who love tacos but can’t abide spicy ones. “It’s hi- larious,” she said.
The May 5 event – the longest-running children’s parade in Fresno County – was a hit with her children. “It was super fun,” Charity said after the procession. “It was super cute, and the kids were super excited.”
The Reedley YMCA Committee each year presents the pa- rade, which makes its way down G Street to end at Pioneer Park. At the park, prizes were announced in a variety of categories, and the youngsters were treated to ice pop treats provided by the Reedley Sunrise Kiwanis Club. The city of Reedley also helps present the event.
A new feature was added this year – a mascot dance-off. Alta Elementary School’s eagle mascot was the winner, outstepping Smokey Bear, according to the audience’s voting by applause and cheers.
