trades in his public safety career
By Juanita Adame

John Agueda, Reedley Fire Department engineer, has been in public service for 46 years. Dur- ing that time he’s not only worked in the fire service, but police and EMS as well.
“I was doing both law enforce- ment and fire at the same time for a while,” Agueda said in a recent interview. “So for example, when I was on scene somewhere I had to think to myself, what role am I playing today? Am I doing the medical part and I doing the fire part, or am I doing the law en- forcement part?”
Agueda's career began as an equipment mechanic for Fresno County, and just before turning 40, he made the move into law en- forcement.
“I was a reserve police officer for the city of Fresno,” he said. “I was then hired with the California Highway Patrol and stayed there for the next 20 years, then 15 here with Reedley [although] some of those years overlapped with CHP.”
When asked which role was the most challenging, Agueda’s answer was fire.
“Every scene [in fire], every situation is different,” he said. “We never know what we’ll run into, in law enforcement of course that can be the same way, but sometimes it was repetitive calls whereas in fire, we don’t know what we’re going to get into once we get there.”
Agueda said his experience also helped him assess situations better.
“Sometimes each role can in- termix because I’ve used parts of each one in whatever scene
we’re at,” he said. “Then, when I go grab a radio, I remind my- self I have to say things a certain way because on the fire side we just use plain English and on the law enforcement side it was all 10 codes.”
Police agencies use 10 codes to communicate quickly and ef- ficiently.
But whether with fire or law enforcement, Agueda said it has always been his mission to serve his community. And, he said he’s proud to continue to do that in Reedley.
“I enjoy working here, the citi- zens here are very grateful when weshowuptoasceneandwetry to assist them however we can,” he said. “Working with our Reed- ley Fire crews here, they are just a great bunch of guys to work with.”
