Paint the R Project on Campbell Mountain set for Nov. 10
Staff Report
The community has another op- portunity to “paint the R” on Camp- bell Mountain this weekend.
Volunteers are planning to go up the mountain on Saturday, Nov. 10, to paint the rocks that form the letter “R” with another coat of
white paint. The group is planning to meet at a location at the base of the mountain at 8 a.m.
It will be the first repainting of the R on the mountain since November 2015. As part of a long- time tradition, the southwest side of Campbell Mountain has a large R for Reedley while the northwest
side has a large S to signify neigh- boring rival city Sanger. The let- ters signify the longtime friendly rivalry between the cities.
Community members are en- couraged to donate $20 apiece to cover the cost of paint for the proj- ect. People planning to attend can pay to cover the cost of paint, sup-
plies, lunch and a t-shirt.
Anyone who is volunteering to
help paint the R has been asked to sign an accident liability waiver form. Volunteers should be in good physical condition, as the hike up the mountain takes about 45 min- utes. The painting project should take much of the morning and com-
pleted by afternoon.
Anyone interested in attending
the painting project can contact the Reedley FFA (Allison Holt, treasur- er) or Reedley High School at (559) 305-7100.
Interested persons also can text @PaintTheR to 81010 for more in- formation.

The Fresno County De- partment of Public Health (FCDPH) main Brix-Mercer building located at 1221 Ful- ton St. in Fresno, will remain closed through December.
The closure is the result of a broken water main on Oct. 17 that flooded the inte- rior portion of the building.
“The Fresno County De- partment of Public Health is committed to providing Public Health services to the community and we are
quickly working on repairs at the Brix-Mercer build- ing,” said David Pomaville, FCDPH director. “During this transitional phase, nor- mal services have been relo- cated to other buildings. We advise the public to visit our website (fcdph.org) or call (559) 600-3200 for more in- formation.”

Explorer program. Garza said that supervisors called her a “team player.”
This year’s Explorer of the Year is Jesus Mendez, who graduated with the 19th Explorer class in 2017. The Reedley High School junior has been an actives and im- portant member of the force, according to Cyndee Friesen, police liaison officer.
“Words used to describe him are respectful, outgoing, focused, fun, nice, hopeful, kind, smart, humble, charis- matic and determined among others,” she said. “He’s some- one you can rely on to help others.”
Friesen said Mendez plays football and basketball at the high school and enjoys friends, family and church. Mendez wants to have a ca- reer in law enforcement.
Police Lt. Marc Ediger pre- sented awards for top arrest achievements. Anthony Walk- er received the award for Top DUI Enforcement. He made 20 of the department’s 120 DUI arrests in the past year.
Joseph Ramer received the Narcotics Officer of the Year award for his 24 of 141 department arrests for illegal narcotics. The Top Gun award was presented to Officer Eric Freedenburg by Sgt. Jesus Rivera. Competitive shooters
are judged on physical abili- ties, knowledge and function- ality of their weapons and marksmanship.
Walker also was honored by the department for team- ing with Officer Daniel Ybar- ra to help rescue a woman from drowning in the Kings River this past summer. In addition, he was one of four awarded with fitness medals. Garza later announced that Walker was being promoted to full officer status, which drew a hearty round of applause.
Debuting this year was the Chief’s Award, where Garza se- lects a person that he believes has contributed most to the de- partment. Crime analysis spe- cialist Dana Boss was given the first award for her exemplary work in the field. She recently was recognized by an interna- tional organization.
Garza presented a special Service Award to Sean Pro- vost, who served 19 years with the department before leaving earlier this year to work for the state of California. During his time in Reedley, Provost served as a field training offi- cer, patrol sergeant, detective sergeant and detective. He was presented with his police badge to keep as thanks for serving the department with honor.
In addition to Walker, fit- ness medal awards went to Michael Anderson, Adam Ramirez and Isaac Martinez.
