Boys strike early in 1-0 win over Roosevelt
Staff Report
The Reedley High boys carried over the momentum of four competitive games at a Santa Maria tournament to claim victories in their first two North Yosemite League soccer matches last week.
The Pirates (11-6-2, 2-0) erupted for three first-half goals on their way to a 5-3 triumph over visiting Fresno High on Jan. 9, then made a first-half goal stand up in a 1-0 shutout at Roosevelt Jan. 11 in a battle of 1-0 teams. Reedley will be home to take on Sunny- side — which won and tied its first two league matches – at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at Sal Gonzalez Field.
Reedley controlled the tempo of the match most of the way against Roosevelt, keeping early offensive pres- sure on that resulted in a score in the 15th minute by junior Tomas Alvarez. The

That first North Yosemite League victory is proving to be elusive for the Reedley High School boys basketball team.
Opening the league campaign with Fresno schools Fresno High and Roosevelt, the Pirates were overpowered by scores of 65-44 against the Warriors on Jan. 9 at RHS gym and 70-48 by the Rough Riders in Fresno. Compounding matters, Reedley (7-9) dropped a 71-50 non-league game at home against Dinuba on Jan. 12 to run their losing streak to five straight.
The Pirates were getting a break on Jan. 16 with a home game against McLane, with RHS and Hoover the three winless teams in league. Results were unavailable at press time. The Pirates also will host Sunnyside at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18. While the Wildcats are 2-0 in league, they are 5-13 overall.
The first round of NYL play closes out on Wednesday, Jan. 23 when the Pirates visit Hoover in a scheduled 6:30 p.m. start. Second

The sting of an 0-2 start in North Yosemite League basketball play for the Reed- ley Tiger girls was eased some by a bit of revenge against Dinuba High.
The Pirates (10-9, 0-2) — reeling off losses at Fresno (70-48 on Jan. 8) and home against Roosevelt (69-47 on Jan. 10) — turned the tables by pulling out a 62-61 victory over the Emperors on Jan. 12 at RHS gym. The decision avenged a 44-35 loss to the Emperors on Dec. 22 in the third place game of the Di- nuba-Orosi Holiday Classic.
The Pirates also hope that the win regains a bit of momentum originally built by winning the Parlier Tournament title on Jan. 5. Reedley plays at Sunnyside High at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17.
Against Fresno, RHS couldn't overcome the one- two punch of the Warriors' Nataly Mata (20 points) and Aajah Slocum (19 points).

Alegria Pena paced Im- manuel with nine points while Laura Schletewitz added eight points. After a Jan. 16 home against against CV Christian, the Eagles play at Kingsburg in a 6 p.m. tipoff on Friday, Jan. 18.
