Staff Report
Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies on Aug. 7 arrested a Parlier man suspected in a residen- tial burglary after a lengthy vehicle chase that began in Del Rey, traveled through downtown Fresno and eventually ended at the San Joaquin River. The department’s Eagle One helicopter and a police dog assisted in the arrest.
Efrain Martinez, 44, was booked into Fresno County Jail on felony counts
of burglary, evading police,
resisting arrest and harming
a K-9 officer. His bail set at
$88,000 and remained in cus-

Tony Botti with the Sher-

in Del Rey. Victims identified Martinez as the suspect when he drove through the area shortly after the burglary, and attempted to make a traffic stop. Martinez refused to pull over, The release stated that Martinez refused and was pursued by deputies who pulled up when the Eagle One helicopter began follow- ing from the air.
During the pursuit, dispatchers received reports from motorists saying that Martinez was holding a gun while driving and pointing it toward trailing deputies. Martinez drove west to Highway 99, eventually turning off into downtown Fresno. When deputies tried to apprehend Martinez near Fresno and P streets when he was stopped by a passing train, Mar- tinez rammed several vehicles and escaped to a side street. He then returned to Highway 99 and the pursuit resumed.
Martinez exited the highway at Avenue 9 in Madera County, driving east and into an or- chard off Road 39. He continued onto the north bluff of the San Joaquin River, where he car

lost control in the soft dirt and rolled down the embankment into the river.
Martinez swam across the river to Scout Island, forcing a lockdown at the camp and the nearby Fig Garden Golf Club as deputies as- sumed the suspect was armed. The Eagle One and a California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted Martinez wading through water trying to take a canoe from the scout camp. The Eagle one hovered over Martinez and prevented him from getting into the canoe.
Martinez waded back to shore and ran be- tween trees and bushes in an effort to escape. The pursuit ended when Bady, a K-9 officer, found the suspect hiding in bushes and depu- ties made the arrest.
Martinez was hospitalized briefly for treat- ment of his dog bites and later booked into jail. The entire incident lasted about an hour and 15 minutes.

son Fire in Mariposa County that led to a temporary clo- sure of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park.
There are a few tips that can help reduce the effects of bad air quality.
1. Place a cool compress on top of your closed eyes.
2. Wear large sunglasses outdoors.
4. Use artificial tears to wash out allergens and pollut- ants in your tear film.
5. Use a humidifier in your home.
6. Limit your time out- doors.
It is important for Central Valley residents to take pre- cautions like these, especially since people who live in re- gions with high levels of pol- lutants are three to four times more likely to develop chronic dry eye syndrome.
