lot of fun," said Apaches head coach Jorge Pena. "It took us a little while to get our legs under us offensively but we eventually settled in and were able to put a few drives together."
Sanger showed off an effective passing game with quarterback John Peña and an array of receivers, after struggling early on with pass protec- tion. A couple of minor scuffles broke loose early in the scrimmage among players anxious to hit someone other than their teammates in practice.
"I was also happy with how our kids flew around on defense all night, they played fast and with a lot of energy," coach Pena said. "We made our share of typical scrimmage mistakes but that's what scrimmages are for. [We] look forward to playing in a real game this week."
That game will be a 7 p.m. contest Friday, March 26, against the Kings- burg High Vikings at Tom Flores Stadium. Kingsburg won its opening game last week, defeating Central Val-
ley Christian at home by a 21-14 score. Reedley High, which had to cancel its March 19 opener with Corcoran High as a precaution in keeping with COVID-10 protocols and guidelines, also will open its season at home on Friday, March 26. It's the North Yo- semite League opener against the Hoover High Patriots of Fresno, and varsity kickoff is scheduled for 7:30
p.m. at Sal Gonzalez Field.
Orosi High managed to begin its
season on March 19, and nearly man- aged a road upset at Caruthers. The Cardinals held a 14-7 lead late in the game, before the Blue Raiders scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final minute to pull out a 15-14 victory.
Senior running back Dominic Mar- tinez paced Orosi's offensive attack with 188 yards rushing on 25 car- ries while scoring both of the team's touchdowns. The Cardinals finished with 280 yards on the ground against Caruthers.
Orosi's home opener is this week, as Riverdale High is the opponent at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 26.
