Fast starts each half, an effective three-quarters/full-court trap and time- ly scoring from three sources gave the Washington Union High Panthers the Reedley Girls Basketball Tournament championship on Dec. 7. The 55-44 de- cision at Reedley High also handed the Pirates their first loss of the season after six victories.
All-tournament selections Tiana Hol- land (game-high 20 points) and Shayla Cuddy (19 points) scored a number of points in transition, and tournament Most Valuable Player Cierra Dean chipped in with 10 points on her way to 45 in the tournament.
“They’re a pretty tough team,” RHS coach Matt Wilkinson said of Washington Union (5-0). “We knew coming in they were going to press pretty aggressively. Unfortunately, it took us about five min- utes to figure it out. Credit to them for doing that.”
Reedley fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, but began to battle back behind senior center Madison Haney. Playing at times against 6-foot-3 sophomore Madi- son Moles, Haney scored 10 points of her team-high 19 points in the first half as the Pirates rallied to tie the game and then trail by just two points (22-20 at halftime.
“She’s really been coming up big for us,” WIlkinson said of Haney. “She’s a
four-year senior on the varsity team, and we’re proud that she’s taken it upon her- self to be a leader.”
Sophomore Miah Paz scored eight of her 17 points in the half, and helped keep Reedley closed midway through the fourth quarter before the Panthers pulled away in the closing minutes.
“She’s a sophomore coming off a pretty fantastic season as a freshman,” Wilkinson said. “We’ve struggled at times to get her the ball, but she’s the kind of kid where she’s got a lot of fight in her and she doesn’t give up.”
Reedley played the final game with- out senior point guard Precious Hawkins, who injured her right knee during a 52- 16 win over Parlier on Dec. 6. It was the same knee Hawkins had ACL surgery on as a sophomore, causing her to miss the 2018-19 season. Wilkinson said Hawkins will undergo an MRI sometime this week, and is expected to miss at least three or four weeks.
Paz scored 16 points and Haney 12 in a 43-20 win over Hanford West on Dec. 5. Paz had 11 of her 18 points and Haney seven of her 11 points in the first half against Parlier as the Pirates cruised to a 31-8 lead at the break.
Reedley returned to action Dec. 10 at Golden West in Visalia, then has a 7:30 p.m. non-league home game against Woodlake on Friday, Dec. 13. The Pirates open play against Orosi High in the Dec. 18-21 Dinuba/Orosi Tournament.
