Garden Checklist: Now is not the time to fertilize plants
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local garden- ers who wish to keep their greenery, flowers and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
With winter in full swing, remember to walk through the gar- den and make notes for spring and summer changes and additions.
Enjoy the quiet of the winter garden. Feed the birds.
Tasks include apply- ing pre-emergent herbi- cide to lawns and beds later this month.
Don't forget to deep-
water trees and native plants if rainfall has been light.
As for pruning, this is the time to work on dor- mant, deciduous plants —shrubs, vines, grapes and roses, plus fruit and nut trees.
Crepe myrtles and redbuds may be pruned now. Cut back and divide perennials.
There should be no fertilization, it is not rec- ommended this month.
When you do fertil- ize, always read labels carefully before appli- cation. Consult a plant expert at a nursery or a Master Gardener if you

have questions. Planting This is the
beginning of bare-root planting season. It is difficult to visualize the potential of bare-root plants, but they usually come with pictures to give you an idea.
Bulbs, corms, tubers: canna and crocosmia.
Fruits and vegetables: asparagus, cabbage and bare-root berries.
Trees, shrubs, vines: azalea and camellia.
Enjoy these now an- nuals and perennials: snapdragon (Antirrhi- num), calendula and Chrysanthemum, palu- dosum. Bulbs, corms,
tubers: crocus and cy- clamen.
Fruits and vegeta- bles: beets, bok choy, chives and mandarin or- anges.
Things to ponder, this is a good time to look through seed catalogs.
Wood ashes are not beneficial in the garden as they increase soil al- kalinity.

Fire crews positioned a ladder on the side of the restau- rant before climbing to the roof of the building.

Continued from page A7
I remembered the ladder truck and the idea that it didn’t look very high, but when I climbed on top, it was high.
This was the same idea, from where I was standing, it didn’t look
very high, but I can as- sure you the top of the restaurant was high.
It made me gain a new appreciation for fire- fighters and how much effort our local crews do to help keep our com- munity safe. Keep it up everyone.
