All of us are social creatures no matter our age. Babies need
to be touched, talked to, held and loved to be healthy and develop to their full potential. is does not change as we grow and age. Seniors also need a loving touch, commu- nication with others and to be involved and engaged in activities with others. e more social relationships a senior has, the better overall health they will have.
For the past several months, all of us, in- cluding the seniors in our communities, have lived in an unnatural way that limits social- ization opportunities. However, we are in unprecedented times where even the health experts among us are having to learn and gure out what is best. Under normal circum- stances, we would not be encouraged to shel- ter in place, wear face
masks, be quarantined and social distance but things are not normal right now.
Even though we all know the bene ts of socialization, the way we are used to do-
ing it, we are living in extraordinary times. Phone calls are good to stay in touch with friends and loved ones. Zoom if you can and use family members who are familiar with
social media to stay in touch with the seniors in your life. We can still maintain relation- ships even though we may need to do it dif- ferently.
It is important to protect the health of those most vulner- able among us, many of them seniors with compromised health. Follow the health of- cials’ guidelines as these have always been
important through the years.
Palm Village has been providing care for seniors in Reedley for over 78 years. We have been through dif- cult times before and we will get through this as well. Smile at as many people as you can today. It might just brighten up their day.
It is important for seniors to socialize

Limit social media and news.
Increased time on social media and partisan news consumption are positively correlated to unhappiness. Replace the illusion of connection over social media with actual phone calls. Choose news sources that provide balanced media coverage, and limit your time on them.
Write letters and cards.
Letter-writing is another long- dormant habit that it’s time to dust o . If you take the time to write letters of appreciation to the people
in your life, they could become trea- sured keepsakes, while keeping you focused on the positive.
Count your blessings.
Every day, take time to record blessings in your life!
Get creative.
Create something. Write short stories, pull out those paints, tackle that novel. Now is the time to do it!
Isolation does not have to be negative. If we take some of these intentional steps, we might just come out of the pandemic stronger than ever.
