Harrell earns all-MWC academic honor
Sanger High product one of 17 Fresno State baseball players to make Spring 2020 team
decision, throwing 1.2 in- nings during a 13-0 win over Cal Poly on Feb. 25. During his 10.1 innings of work, he struck out eight and walked three, and fanned four Co- lumbia University batters in two innings of work.
But it's in the classroom — and online — where Har- rell stood out among confer- ence student athletes. His 4.0 grade point average in kine- siology and sports adminis- tration was the highest of the Bulldog baseball players.
At Sanger High, Harrell was the County Metro Ath- letic Conference Player of the Year in 2019, earning California Interscholastic Federation all-state honors by going 12-1 with 143 strike- outs and a 0.65 earned run average in 85.2 innings for
the Apaches. On offense, he batted .457 with 12 doubles, three triples, a home run and 25 runs batted in as Sanger went 22-7-1 and reached the section Division 2 final be- fore dropping a 3-2 decision to CMAC rival San Joaquin Memorial.
Eligible selections must have completed at least one academic term at the mem- ber institution and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better, in addition to being a starter or significant contributor on their respective athletic team.
Fresno State finished the abbreviated baseball season with a 9-7 record, highlight- ed by a six-game win streak in late February and early March.
MVT Staff Report
Sanger High product Jake Harrell was one of 17 Fresno State baseball players — and one of 114 total student-ath- letes from the university — to be honored by the Moun- tain West Conference as a member of the Spring 2020 academic all-conference team.
The team was announced on July 27, and was led by 20 athletes from the women's track and field team along with 19 from women's swim- ming and diving.
It was a record-breaking spring academic season for Bulldog student-athletes, as the 114 honorees topped the previous record of 99 set in 2018. Fresno State has exceeded 90 selections in the spring semester for six consecutive years, and the school had 53 selections from the fall 2019 semester consisting of athletes in foot- ball, cross country, women's soccer and volleyball.

Velarde subbed in at the 54th min- ute for Ropapa Mensah, and fed Ry- an James for the Riverhounds' final goal in the 65th minute. Pittsburgh earlier received two goals from Ste- evan Dos Santos.

As of this week, the Immanuel High Eagles have scheduled an eight- game "2020" football season, begin- ning with a scrimmage the last week of December and the first game on Friday, Jan. 8.
The Eagles — who went 9-3 last season competing as an independent and reached the Central Serction Di- vision 5 quarterfinals — will have a Tuesday, Dec. 29, scrimmage at Parli- er High School. Ten days later, they'll open their campaign in Fresno at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, against Roosevelt High School in the first of four con- secutive road games.
After Friday contests at Mendota (Jan. 15), Fowler (Jan. 22) and Shafter (Jan. 29), Immanuel hosts the first of three home games with a 7:30 p.m.
contest on Friday, Feb. 5, in County Line Stadium against fellow Central Sequoia League member Central Val- ley Christian. The Eagles also have home games with Liberty-Madera Ranchos (Feb. 26) and McFarland (March 19) following a Feb. 12 road game in Oakhurst against Yosemite High.
"Our hope is to have 10 [games]," said Josh Franco, Immanuel athletic director. "We lost a few [games] due to COVID and leagues rescheduling. [We] will keep working on adding to the schedule as games come up."
In the meantime, Franco is work- ing to finalize the other fall sports schedules, which also begin in late December and early January. Vol- leyball, water polo and cross country compete at those times, while winter and spring sports will run concurrent- ly beginning in March through June.
