Pirates place sixth out of 20 teams

This week’s prep bas- ketball action for Reed- ley schools includes a Sanger appearance for the Reedley High boys and a Central Sequoia League showdown for the Immanuel High Ea- gles.
The Pirates (11-2) take on the Selma High Bears in a 10:30 a.m. tipoff of the Central Val- ley Showdown at Sanger High School on Saturday, Jan. 4. It’s the first of seven games featuring Central Section teams as well as Folsom High from the Sac-Joaquin section. Host Sanger High will take on Lem- oore at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday, Jan. 3, Im- manuel High (7-5, 1-1 CSL) travels to Dinuba to face the Emperors (14-1, 2-0), who suffered their first loss of the season at the Polly Wil- helmsen Tournament in Visalia. The Eagles. last year’s state runners-up in Division 4, will host Roosevelt in a 6 p.m. non- league game on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Madera High in a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on Wednes- day, Jan. 8.

In girls basketball, Reedley High (8-4) opens play at the Parlier Tour- nament on Thursday, Jan. 2 in a 3:30 p.m. tipoff against Minarets High. The Pirates are defend- ing tourney champs, and will have single games through Saturday, Jan. 4.
Reedley dropped its final three games at the Dinuba-Orosi Holiday Classic Dec. 18-22, fin- ishing 1-3 in the tourney. They defeated Orosi High before losing to eventual champion Por- terville High. Roosevelt and Lemoore.
Sophomore Miah Paz scored 80 points in the four games and earned all-tournament recogni- tion.
Immanuel High’s girls (4-10, 0-2 CSL) had a non-league game in Madera Ranchos against Liberty High on Dec. 30. The Eagles resume league play with a 7:30 p.m. home matchup against Dinuba on Fri- day, Jan. 3, followed by a road matchup against Selma High on Thurs- day, Jan. 9.

Led by 133-pound champion Philip Arroyo, the host Reedley High Pi- rates placed sixth out of 20 teams in the team’s Cali- fornia Classic Varsity Boys Wrestling Tournament at RHS gym on Dec. 14.
Sophomore Arroyo, who went 23-10 and reached the Central Sec- tion finals at 120 pounds as a freshman, went un- beaten against section opponents and wrestlers from other sections. Teammate Gabriel Ba- dilla finished third in the 161-pound class.
Three Pirates took home fifth place medals at the tournament: Cesar Guzman at 127 pounds, Efrain Ortiz in the 139 di- vision and Quince Quin- tana at 171 pounds.

League dual season be- gins Wednesday, Jan. 15, with a double dual meet in Fresno against Hoover and host Roosevelt high schools.

For the second consecutive year, the Reedley High girls wrestling team placed first at the Orange Cove Lady Titan Clash tourna- ment on Dec. 14.
Led by 131-pound champion Jocelyn Barrera, the Pirates turned in top three finishes in 10 weight classes and fourth place in another. Second place finishers were Alexis Tristan (111 lbs.), Rocio Andrade (116), Alicia Garza (143) and Angelica Villegas (160). Turning in third place showings were Yael Ocampo (101), Kilie Giglio (121), Mariah DelBosque (126), Esther Villa (170) and Van- essa Mora (170). Also, Sarah Reyna took fourth place in the 106-pound class.
The Pirates girls will compete in three tournaments during the winter vacation break. First, they’ll travel to the Central Coast to participate in the Morro Bay Girls Invitational (Saturday, Dec. 21) before returning to the coastal region for the Santa Paula Tournament (Saturday, Jan. 4).
Right before winter-spring classes begin, the Pirates will compete at the Sanger Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Sanger High School. North Yosemite League double dual matches are scheduled for consecutive Wednesdays, Jan. 15 and 22, in Fresno.
Emperors prepare for upcoming Dinuba Invitational

More honors keep coming in for the 2019 Golden Coast Confer- ence champion Reedley College Tiger football team.
The 10-1 Tigers were ranked 20th in the state in the final 2019 Junior College Athletic Bureau Top 25 poll.
Six Tigers were named to the Region 2 California All American team. One of the honored Tigers, Jamon Cham-
bers, was the only player in the state to be honored twice as a running back and as an all-purpose player. The other of- fensive selections were kicker Jorge Rosales and offensive lineman Joshua Reba.
Defensive players receiving All American honors were lineman Jay Vance, defensive back Charles Peeples and line- backer Keenan Fyles.
Also honored as Coach of the Year was Eric Marty.

Members of the Dinuba High wrestling team will begin the New Year on a mission as the Emperors will be among the 50 plus teams vy- ing for a team title at Dinuba Invita- tional this weekend (Jan. 3-4).
Dinuba has one of the top 152 pound wrestlers in the state, Noah Cortez. On Dec. 21, Cortez wrapped up an impressive showing at the prestigious Zinkin Classic at Bu- chanan where he defeated Nicco
Ruiz of St. John Bosco, 5-3 in the finale.
Over the weekend, Dinuba par- ticipated in the DeLiddo Classic in Lemoore as freshman Jasias Carrasco placed second overall at 106. Carrasco’s bid to claim an in- dividual title was denied by Dylan McDonald of Lemoore, who pre- vailed 5-4.
Carrasco opened the day with a pair of wins over Jonathan Rodri- guez of Pacheco and Michael Hugh of Westmont.
Classmate Coen Quintanilla fin- ished 5th overall at 120 pounds. Af- ter pinning Angel Ramirez of Fres- no and Giovanni Carrillo of Hanford West, Quintanilla suffered a loss to Jaden Hernandez of Golden Valley. Quintanilla rebounded by defeat- ing Theodore Vo of Westmont and Samuel Garcia of El Diamante be- fore closing out the day with a pin over Alejandro Orozco of Parlier.
At 132, Duke Jimenez went 2-2 while Kobe Ortega went 1-2 at 152 and Matt Montalvo was 1-2 at 126.
