and served the Lord joyfully together in Orosi. Patsy loved to play the piano, enjoyed crafts, and mostly loved people. She was employed by the US Postal Service for over 30 years and was never too busy to visit with the people on her mail route or to play the piano at church and rest homes nearly every Sun- day. Thelma Ichiyama
January 14, 1917 -
April 7, 2020
Thelma Ichiyama passed away peacefully in her sleep with family members present at the Sierra View Retirement Com-
munity in Reedley on April 7, 2020. Born in Reedley on
January 14, 1917, Thelma was 103 years young. A long-time
resident of the Central Val- ley, Thelma graduated from
Reedley High School and was an integral part of the local community. Her life was one of both challenges and joy. In 1942 Thelma and her
family were relocated to one of ten WWII internment camps, Poston #3 in Arizona. She met her future husband Richard M. Ichiyama at Poston and they were married in 1944 in Parker, AZ. Once released from internment, Thelma and
her husband lived in Chicago, IL for a period of time before returning to Los Angeles and eventually back to Reedley in 1955 where Thelma raised her family and spent the remain- der of her years. Thelma was known by family and friends as someone who could put a smile on anyone’s face through her wry sense of humor. She always carried a positive attitude and embraced the moment which clearly contributed to her longevity and quality of life. In her later years she enjoyed weekly card games with her close friends and would fondly remark that the games had gone on for over 20 years. Her 100th birthday marked a rare milestone and we were blessed to have her for several years beyond that. Thelma will be missed but lived a long and prosperous life. Thelma is pre- ceded in death by her parents, Masahei and Tsuna Sakamoto, siblings Louise, Fumiko, Ruby, Masaru, and Kenji, her hus- band, Richard and his eldest son Richard (Dickie) Ichiyama, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Harriet, sons Steven and Michael, and grandchildren, Ryan and Isabel. The family would especially like to acknowledge Janet Habegger, M.D. for her medical expertise and for her kindness, compassion and support in providing this care.
In lieu of flowers or monetary donations, Thelma’s family requests that donations be made in Thelma’s memory to a charity of choice.
