CREDITS
Continued from FRONT
discussed the credit increase last February. Current freshmen would have had to earn 250 credits, but that did not take effect.
Rodriguez said that PHS graduation requires 230 out of 280 credits to graduate.
When Parlier High went from a six to a seven-period day several years ago, the requirement changed to 220 out of 240.
“They’re actually 220 out of 240 with a 20-credit buffer,” Rodriguez said. “That’s about 15 to 20 credit buffers with the requirement, versus the overall.”
When academic leadership
team met, plans were to narrow the 50-credit cushion by increasing the number of credits from 230 to 250.
“That still gives a 30-credit buffer,” he said.
The increase was to take effect this year with the current freshmen – Class of 2021.
“Within our handbook it does not state the number of credits for incoming freshman, but it does state that there is going to be an increase that is being considered,” he said.
That increase would then allow an increase for current eight grade students coming in to the high school – class of 2022 – taking it to 260.
Once that is increased to 260 for eighth grade,
students are “in the range of a 15 to 20 credit leeway.”
Current graduation credits for sophomores would stay at 230.
Trustee Edgar Pelayo seemed to be in favor of the increase. He said that when the high school went from the six to seven period day, he was concerned students were getting too much leeway.
“I get that ithelps increase graduation rates, but it also gives students that lack of mentality of 'I can afford to fail basically five courses and I’m still okay,’” Pelayo said. “That’s probably not a good mentality to have for our students. I think that’s expecting the best out of them.”
