Mares' goal is to identify
high achieving students “mostly first generation, from small rural communities in the San Joaquin Valley.”
He said the program goes through five goals: smart goals; networking; oral communication skills; reviewing the universities’ selection process for admission; and bringing guest speakers.
The Ivy League is also broken into two different strands — a monthly Saturday section and a trip.
Mares said the Saturday sessions — held at Sanger's Annadale Baptist Church,
the trip, which is $2,700. Mares said that always is a challenge for all students.
Serrano and Monroy have reached out to businesses in the community but are still in need of donations.
Donations for Serrano and Monroy's Ivy League trip can be mailed to Youth2Leaders Education Foundation at 1701 Westwind Drive, #116, Bakersfield, CA. 93391.
Over the past 26 years, 12 Parlier High students have been accepted to Ivy League Schools.
Some are now back in Parlier to give back to their communities and to encourage students like them.
To be accepted into the program, Mares said students must have a grade point average of 3.75.

and which students are required to attend — are very important. Students are expected to wear professional attire and to develop their own business card.
During the workshops, students learn about the 12 steps that they need to work on to be accepted into an Ivy League school. In addition, they hear from speakers that include Ivy League alumni, business professionals, and school administrators.
Through the program, students take a trip to the east coast to visit numerous Ivy League Schools and speak with admissions officers and both current and past students.
