Sierra Kings Health Care District grants help fund two safety programs
Contributed
The Sierra Kings Health Care District this year has commit- ted almost $175,000 in grants to local agen- cies for the implemen- tation of preventative programming related to obesity, diabetes, and behavioral health care.
The city of Reedley is the recipient of two grants valued at a little more than $13,000, to promote water safety via the Reedley Beach Water Safety Program and the Swim Lesson Program.
While attempting to save three children at Reedley Beach, an adult male drowned on Aug. 8, 2020. Unfortu- nately, this is not an iso- lated incident. In fact, there have been almost drownings every year and drowning every other year.
Seeing this most re- cent drowning as an opportunity to increase water safety awareness, last fall the city of Reed- ley tasked its Communi- ty Services Commission to investigate strategies

to reduce the likelihood of future drownings.
City staff and the commission explored best practices that have been employed in other jurisdictions, including a lifeguard on duty, life vests, etc. Still, each one of these options come along with complexities around implementation and risk management.
“The city of Reedley is not sitting idly on this topic. City staff contin- ue to work with local safety agencies to deter- mine which strategies will work best in our area.” said Nicole Zieba, Reedley city manager.
In the meantime, the Sierra Kings Health Care District has part- nered with Reedley to fund user-friendly sig- nage and outreach ma- terials to promote safe-
ty at Reedley Beach. When hanging out at the beach, the community now will see prominent colorful signage with universal infographics at Reedley Beach and Cricket Hollow Park.
In addition, bilingual handouts cautioning families about the risks of the beach are handed out periodically. Finally, as direct outreach to the youth, activity books re- garding the dangers of Reedley Beach and safe- ty strategies are distrib- uted at the beach and via the city’s summer swimming program.
This summer, the Si- erra Kings Health Care District also partnered with Reedley to fund free swimming lessons for 120 children from qualifying families. A 2017 study found that 64 percent of African American children, 45 percent of Hispanic/ Latino children, and 40 percent of Caucasian children have no or low swimming abilities put- ting them at higher risk for drowning.
