The California Depart- ment of Education recognized the Kings Canyon Unified School District for recent improvement in test scores.
Test scores were re- leased early Oct. 2 and show positive, consistent growth in English Language Arts (or ELA) and mathematics.
Collectively, 49.46 per- cent of KCUSD students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 met or exceeded the state- wide standards in ELA and 36.01 percent met or exceed- ed the standard in math.
Scores also showed a notable increase in year- over-year ELA and math test scores. ELA scores increased 2.07 percent compared to 2017 scores and 12.48 percent compared to 2015 scores.
Math scores increased 3.43 perctn compared to 2017 and showed a 15.01 percent increase compared to 2015 scores.
As a result of continued growth in ELA and math, KCUSD was featured earlier today as one of three “Suc- cess Stories” in the CDE pre- ss release regarding State test scores. The three dis- tricts that were highlighted, were chosen from 1,026 dis- tricts across the State. The other two districts were Brawley Union High School District in Imperial County and San Diego Unified School District.
“The state test scores provide affirmation of our District’s collective and con- tinued dedication to student success. These results are reflective of the work being done every day by our stu- dents, staff and community.
With our focus on growth, we are thankful to our many partners and surrounding dis- tricts for their collaboration in helping our students’ reach their fullest potential.
We are humbled and hon- ored that the State recognized Kings Canyon Unified School District as a ‘Success Story’
in their press release,” said KCUSD Superintendent John Campbell.
Students in California public schools in grades 3 through 8 and 11 take the Smarter Balanced Summa- tive Assessments that are part of the State testing program called the Califor- nia Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The 2018 comput- er adaptive test was adminis- tered in KCUSD schools last spring (March – May).
Test scores provide one way for schools to measure how students are learn- ing. Coupled with students’ grades and other information, test results inform school dis- tricts if students are on track for academic success in high- er grades, and are ready for college and/or career.
For students in grade 11, test results are used by some California colleges to deter- mine readiness for college- level courses.
