Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School has started a pantry project on campus to help families in need for the holidays.
Delfina Alvarez, special education instructional aide at the school, had the idea two years ago.
In November, as Thanksgiving was approaching, she pitched the idea to the school's PTC and the project was started.
"We started with a food drive in November and what

Students brought in different items including canned goods, pasta and cereal.
Staff members then donated other items such as eggs and tortillas and other protein foods.
During Thanksgiving week, the school gave out food baskets to four different families but still had plenty more to give away.

about making more food baskets during the Christmas holiday," Gomez said.
School staff decided to make the drive a class competition to motivate students to donate items.
"When I was collecting the food from each classroom, every day that I would go for the two weeks that we were collecting it, the kids — from kindergarten all the way up — were very excited," Alvarez said.
When the students learned that there already was a class winner, the other classrooms still remained very excited

garage.
Police said propane tanks
in the area began to go off, causing the fire to escalate quicker than usual.
Looking out for their safety, officers on scene had to back up from the area as the fire was spreading too fast.
Officers then removed the propane tanks from the side of the house so they wouldn’t burst, and began evacuating neighboring homes.
Fresno County Fire then arrived on scene and worked quickly to put the blaze out.
The puppies were returned to their owners frightened but unharmed.
The family was thankful no one was hurt and thankful the lives of the two puppies were saved as well as the Christmas tree.
to bring items because they knew they were helping someone in need, Alvarez said.
"Itwasalotofjoyforme being able to get it together and then seeing their reactions throughout the whole time," she said.
Aside from helping families in need, Alvarez also had another goal in mind.
She wanted students to learn that they can both benefit and contribute to society.
She said some of the students didn't know they would benefit from the
project but were still very excited to participate.
"The idea of the whole things is for students to get the idea that they can benefit socially as well as emotionally — that they benefit from that saying 'we actually gave something that is going to help somebody else out,'" Alvarez said. "That's the satisfaction that I wanted the kids to get, is knowing that they're helping out."
Alvarez, who spearheaded the project, said there are plans to make the pantry a year-long event project.
