Our first show was a disaster. I had never heard of such words, and began to realize I was not cut out to report the news in Spanish.
That experience made me understand what Jose was talking about when he said the word “biliterate.”
“For me, I was an English learner, and then when I went to school my Spanish did not be- come as strong as my English,” he said. “To- day I can tell you that my English is far stron- ger than my Spanish.”

programs like these pro- vide both native English speakers and English learners with general academic instruction in two languages from kin- dergarten onward.
The article also states that dual immer- sion programs are grow- ing rapidly in the and the expansion appears driven by a number of complementary forces: a large increase in the share of U.S. schoolchil- dren who are not native English speakers.
“When I was hired, it was one of the first projects I was given to look into to see what the feasibility would be and to start studying and start looking at what we could do,” said Guzman.
“When Mr. [John] Campbell became su- perintendent this was one of the things he ex- plained to the board that he would like to bring to this district.”
Guzman explained that a dual immersion programs have caused concern among some
“I went to school,” he continued. “At a time when strengthening the primary language was not a priority.”
During my talk with Jose I flash-backed to my time in Texas and re- alized Jose and I shared a very similar experience.
I also grew up speak- ing primarily Spanish.
I remember starting kindergarten not know- ing much English. As I progressed through my grade levels, my Span- ish then became weaker and my English became stronger.
It was then that I understood the goal of a dual immersion pro-
parents.
“A lot of parents
have fear, they want their children to learn English if they are a na- tive Spanish speaker,” he said.
“However, by strengthening that pri- mary language it allows the learning of English to happen quickly and academically.”
The end goal, to have students speaking both languages fluently.
“This is part of the reason I have so much passion for dual immer- sion, but it comes down to wanting our students to be marketable upon graduation,” he said.
“Having options and skills that we can give them that will help them in the work force because it has definitely helped me.”
Guzman also added that the program will benefit a Spanish speak- ers differently than it would benefit English speakers.
“Whereas an English speaker also being im- mersed in the program, English learners and English speakers then
gram. It's almost like filling up two glasses of water side by side simul- taneously until they are filled with water equally.
Had I been intro- duced to a dual immer- sion program during my elementary school years, my time in Texas as an impromptu Spanish news anchor might have not been so embarrassing.
I am looking for- ward to the progress of this program, Jose said they are in the process of looking for teachers and hope to begin in Au- gust 2020. Great job to KCUSD for keeping up with the Latino commu- nity.
become biliterate.” he said. “It’s kind of a dif- ferent angle for each student.”
The next step? Guz- man said hiring quali- fied instructors to teach dualimmersionclasses.
“We have not hired our teachers but we are looking both within and from outside, they have to have the appropriate credentials,” he said. “In order to teach a du- al immersion program, teachers must have a special credential, they have to have dual lan- guage authorization, or B CLAD."
B CLAD meaning the (Bilingual) Cross- cultural, Language and Academic Development.
How many teachers are hired Guzman said depends on interest.
“If we have enough teachers to open up mul- tiple classes, we will do so,” he said. “Right now the deadline to apply is Feb. 3.”
