dren, he said he remembers a difficult life as the son of migrant farm work- ers.
“It was hard work,” he recalled. “And I remember my mom constant- ly pushing all of us, telling us ‘unless you do well in school, this is what you might have to do the rest of your life,’ and I hated doing it. It was hot in the summer and miserably cold in the winter. It was dirty. It was hard work.”
Admittedly, Rodriguez said he didn’t see a lot of potential in himself as he was preparing to leave high school. He considered joining the Marines and had gone as far as meet- ing with a Marine recruiter. But after speaking with his high school coun- selor who persuaded him to consider at least going to community college, Rodriguez canceled his plans to join the marines and instead enrolled at Porterville Community College.
There, while taking his general education classes, Rodriguez took a class on criminology. He found it in- teresting, and the next semester he took two criminology classes. In his second year there, while taking a cou- ple more classes on criminology, the Porterville Police Department came to the recruit for reserve police of- ficers, something he said was much easier to do back in 1979.

He joined and, after a three-week course, Rodriguez was appointed as reserve police officer for the City of Porterville Police Department at the ripe old age of 19.
“They actually gave me a full uni- form and everything,” said Rodri- guez.
From there, he was hooked.
“I fell in love with the job,” he said. “I did it for about year and I knew that this is what I wanted to do... I loved doing the job.”
It was a perfect fit for Rodriguez. He entered the police academy and, after graduating, was hired by the Porterville Police Department on Jan. 8, 1980.
He said he remembers being asked in his interview why he wanted to be- come a police officer. The question, he admitted at the time, he hadn’t really given much thought to and it caught him a bit off guard. And then it occurred to him.
