      The View From Here
There is an em- barrassing confession I am going to make. I was never on time to school.
I re-
member having to walk to school during my fresh- men year at Sanger High School. I would often times wakeuplateandbeina rush to leave the house on time. I would walk my fastest to class but hardly ever made it.
I never liked being late; because my first class was always one of my fa- vorites. It was a Hom-Ec class, or cooking class. I remember making some really good dishes in that class.
One of the first things we learned how to bake was Lemon Meringue pie. I also remember my cook- ing teacher, telling us that when we washed dishes to wash the pans that had been used to cook eggs in cold water. If we washed the dish in hot water it would re-cook the egg.
Not sure how much I believed that, but it’s something I think about each time I’m going to wash a pan that I’ve used to cook eggs.
When I walked onto the Reedley High School cam- pus on the evening of Jan. 27 to cover the school's open house for one of their newest culinary class- rooms, these were the thoughts that flooded my mind. Somehow, my cur- rent experiences seem to make me flash back to my personal and similar ex- periences. Other than my consistent tardiness, my cooking class was rather enjoyable.
I had the opportunity to talk with Daniel Bueno. He is the cooking instruc- tor for the culinary class. He told me he teaches more than 100 students peryear. Duringtheopen house, guests were able to see the new appliances and even sample some of the student made food.
Congratulations to the students! Looking forward for more invites and tast- ing some more of your de- licious food.
Next week I’ll be talk- ing about the career and college expo that was held earlier this week at Reed- ley High School. What a great event that was. I met students with the schools video production class and they told me about a YouTube show they have called RHS Connection. Stay tuned!

Daniel Bueno is in his sixth year of teaching the culinary class at Reedley High School,. He said the recent remodel of what used to be the school's Home Economics classroom has given him and his stu- dents so much more to work with and learn from.
“We have completely re- vamped the entire classroom, what we’ve done is we’ve moved away from the 1970s, 1980s hom-ec department” Bueno said on the evening of Jan. 27. “We now have a new advanced culinary facility.”
The school had an open house to celebrate the re- model. The classroom now has state-of-the-art equipment for students to use.
“When the building was getting remodeled we had to be in the library,” said Sidney Lopez.
Lopez is a junior at Reed- ley High and said she has

enjoyed taking the culinary class.
“So for the first seven, eight weeks of class we had to be in the library, she said. “We went over safety and sanitation procedures, how to
wash our hands, how to wash the food.”
The class is part of the schools VROP program or Valley Regional Occupation Program. It’s an early college experience for high school
students.
