On Dec. 5, the Dinuba FFA Vine Pruning team went to Napa Valley to compete in their first vine pruning competition of the season. In addition to competing, students also took a tour of a winery to learn about wine and what happens after grapes are harvested. Members learned about the process of making wine and the hard work involved.
Hugh Davies, who works at the Schramsberg Vineyards in Napa Valley, shared an interesting fact that he took over the company that had been in his family for generations. He provided an amazing tour that covered the importance of growing, and caring for, the grape vines and their pruning practices. From Dinuba, there were a total of five competitors: Jesus Gutierrez, Nate Martin, Steven Jimenez, Angelica Mondragon, and Karen Cabellos.
The Dinuba FFA Vine competitors have been coached by Mr. Browne, an agriculture teacher at Dinuba High School.
The next morning, members competed in bilateral spur pruning, quadrilateral cane pruning, and quadrilateral spur pruning and took a general knowledge test that consist of 50 questions. Cane pruning is a method used in Thompson Seedless variety grapes and other table grapes. Spur pruning consist of cutting shoots, to prepare table and wine grapes for growth for the coming growing season.
Pruning establishes the vine to produce more grapes, which gives the grower more quality rather than quantity. The general knowledge test quizzes competitors on the different varieties of grapes, pruning history, pruning methods, and plant physiology. Overall, Dinuba placed 11th out of 21 teams at their very first competition of the season.
On Jan. 12, Dinuba FFA hosted the annual
Arrests
Dinuba Vine Pruning contest which hosts school from all over California. A total of 13 schools from across the state participated in the annual event.
The contest had a total of 24 teams, including our own. Guest judges, including local agriculture teachers, growers, and alumni helped be officials for the contest scoring pruning abilities and taking reasons all while providing feedback for improvement. Members from Dinuba FFA helped with contest rotations, tabulations, scorecard collection, and test administration as well.
Upcoming contests for the vine team include Selma, Reedley College, and State Finals at Fresno State Feb. 2. Dinuba is very proud of the team’s efforts so far in the season and looks forward to their continued success, and growth, of valuable skills in the agricultural industry.
