Tigers' Hassan Bolden to play for University of Antelope Valley
in-person baseball
option in Reedley
MVT Staff Report
Sophomore guard Hassan Bolden, the second-leading scorer for Reedley College in the 2019-2020 season, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Antelope Valley in Lancaster.
The Tigers’ men’s basketball program announced the move on social media on July 3. In con- gratulating Bolden, the school said in the tweet “no doubt that you are going to be a huge asset over there!”
The Pioneers had a 28-4 re- cord last season, posting a per- fect 14-0 record in Cal Pac Con- ference play. They then won their opening NAIA Division
II Championship tournament game before the remainder of the season was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bolden averaged 20 points per game, 19.4 in Central Val- ley Conference play, to comple- ment fellow guard and leading scorer Uriah Carter as Reedley College posted a 16-12 overall and 7-7 conference record. His season-best scoring output was 31 points against Napa Valley on Dec. 5, and he surpassed 20 points in 14 other games.
Bolden averaged 16.9 points during his two years with the Tigers, and as a sophomore he pulled down nearly 10 rebounds per game while averaging 3.4 assists.

There won’t be any actual games because of COVID-19, but the city of Reedley’s Ju- nior Giants program still is planning to provide an in- person baseball experience for local youngsters.
The in-person Junior Gi- ants season — which is limit- ed to twice-a-week hour-long practices — will run from Monday, July 13 through Thursday, Aug. 6. Registra- tion for the program has been extended through Fri- day, July 17, at 5 p.m.
Jesus Rodriguez, rec- reation coordinator for the city of Reedley, said the four- week in-person season offers two age categories: 5-6 years and 7-9 years. He said all teams entered in the league will be given a designated field space and time for their practices, and play will be held clinic style.
Earlier this spring and summer, the city and the Ju- nior Giants organization of- fered a four-week “virtual” online season that started in May and attracted 60 play- ers. It’s an ongoing program that players can still join in.
“This virtual program gave Junior Giants players the opportunity to learn dif- ferent fundamentals, partici- pate in indoor activities and connect with other players from different cities – all through Zoom,” Rodriguez said. “This virtual season was very successful in many cities [including Reedley], which has extended the op- portunity until Aug. 1.”
Rodriguez said players can be signed up for the vir- tual season by going to Jrgi- antsathome.org, and register- ing under the city of Reedley.
Because of COVID-19, new procedures including so- cial distancing are being en- forced. For this year, at least, no player incentives or read- ing programs are available.
For the in-person season, parents can register their child online through Dash at apps.dashplatform.com/ dash/index.php?Action=Auth/ login&company+reedley. Registation can be done through smartphone, com- puter/tablet or at a registra- tion kiosk in the Community Services office at the Reed- ley Community Center, 100 N. East Ave.
For more information, call the city at (559) 637-4203.

Reedley Community Ser- vices also is offering cheer classes and Hip Hop class- es later this summer. The six-week cheer classes for beginners run from 2 to 3 p.m. or 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday beginning July 29, and will be held at the Reedley Community Center.
The classes are designed to prepare children ages 4 years and older for school and competitive cheer, but start with basic beginner instruction. Instructors and spectators must wear masks and students will be subject to a health check each time they arrive for class.
The Hip Hop classes run from 6 to 7 p.m. beginning Friday, Aug. 21, and are de- signed for kids 4 and up. Children will learn differ- ent styles of Hip Hop, how to work as a team and gain confidence while having fun. Social distancing and safety measures also will be prac- ticed.
For more information on either program, call (559) 637-4203.

Sanger Stars captured NSA NorCal Sate Championship in 2019

This time last year the Sanger Stars 14-and-under softball team was off to the Western World Series of softball after winning the National Softball Associations Northern California State Championship on July 7, 2019. After putting on a dominant performance in early rounds, the Stars battled against the Kerman Prodigies in the championship game.
Taking a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning of the game, the Stars saw their lead vanish the next inning as the Prodigies managed to bring in three runs to take a 5-4 lead. However, the Sanger team was able to rally late in the game for a 6-5 title victory.
This year the team was able to get some practices in and even a couple of games before pandemic guide- lines were recently scaled back, putting a halt to competitive sports.
