Dinuba police warn public of SSA arrest scam
Contributed
The Dinuba Police Depart- ment are warning residents of a new scam surfacing in the city.
Police said that on Aug. 27, a citizen came into the police department and reported he had sent cash and gift cards to a male subject who identi- fied himself as a federal agent with the Social Security Ad-
ministration (SSA) and a Di- nuba police officer. The im- personator identified himself as "Officer Ben."
Officer Ben asked his vic- tim several questions about their recent travels attempt- ing to gain as much informa- tion from the victim as pos- sible. Once the impersonator confirms information about his victim, he tells them a ve- hicle they rented was found
with narcotics and weapons. The impersonating officer then tells the victim there is a warrant for their arrest. Po- lice say that at this point, the victim is advised they have to pay a large sum of money to put the warrant on hold. The impersonating agent/officer then convinces his victim to withdraw large sums of cash from their banks and drive to Fresno to deposit the cash into
Bitcoin machines to complete the transaction. The imper- sonating Agent/Officer also convinces victims to purchase gift cards and to forward the codes to him while on the phone.
Dinuba PD wants the citi- zens of Dinuba to be aware of the following information. Please be advised there are il- legal phone scams occurring in the city attempting to de-
fraud citizen(s) of large sums of cash and gift cards. Be aware, the department does not ask citizens for money in order to clear warrants or for any other reasons.
If anyone receives a similar call from someone impersonat- ing an officer or agent claiming to be from the Dinuba Police Department, please contact Dinuba Police to report fraud or scam at (559) 591-5911.
