8 LIONS
Martin Johnson (England)
England’s World Cup-winning captain made the three great Lions tours –
New Zealand, South Africa and Australia – and became the rst player in Lions history to captain two tour parties. Made his Lions debut against the All Blacks in 1993 when he ew in from Canada, where he was touring with England to replace Wade Dooley, and immediately made his mark by playing in the second and third Tests, contributing to a famous win in the former. Johnson unsurprisingly looked at home in New Zealand where he had previously played for College Old Boys and King Country during a spell living
in the country; indeed, he played for New Zealand U21. He played 15 games on three tours, scoring three tries.
JPR Williams (Wales)
Was still known as plain John Williams when he rst toured with the Lions in 1971, but such was his impact in New Zealand that he soon became known simply by his initials. He had rst sampled rugby in
New Zealand in the badly outclassed Wales team in 1969, and although when he arrived in 1971 he enjoyed
a reputation as a running fullback,
it was his fearlessness in the tackle and aggressive physicality that caught the eye, o en positioning himself alongside Barry John to help his rst ve-eighth out in defence. Williams was ever present in all four Tests in 1971 and helped earn the Lions a 14-14 draw in the nal Test –
to clinch the series – with a 50-yard dropped goal. Made 30 Lions appearances for 28 points.
