Gareth Edwards (Wales)
A phenomenal player who toured South Africa in 1968 before the glory years with the 1971 and 1974 parties.
In New Zealand in 1971 he was forced o with a hamstring strain in the rst Test when Chico Hopkins did an admirable job as sub, but was back in harness for the second Test – although his opposite number Sid Going enjoyed a superb game that day as the
All Blacks won comfortably. Edwards was back at full tilt in the third and fourth Tests, making a try for Barry John in the former with a powerful break when he handed o Bob Burgess before passing to his halves partner John. In total he played in 10 Lions Tests, tasting victory on ve occasions, while there were two draws and three defeats. He made 39 appearances overall and scored 58 points.
Ian McLauchlan (Scotland)
The man known as “Mighty Mouse”
is the Scottish prop who anchored
the scrum in both the 1971 and 1974 Lions tours, being ever present during all those eight Tests. The Lions had turned to McLauchlan in 1971 a er they lost the services of Sandy Carmichael and Ray McLaughlin a week before the rst Test in Dunedin when both had been injured during their bruising win over Canterbury. He and Sean Lynch both stepped up to the plate and,
as well as scrummaging hard, McLauchlan scored the one international try of his career in the rst Test, a charge-down. A diminutive but muscular gure, his duels with
the massive 120kg Jazz Muller were a feature of the 1971 series. Made 30 Lions appearances in total.
