After a period of rigorous preparation, the races began in earnest from January. At each championship, the team competed
in a minimum four events: 4x5km Classic Relay, 15km Individual Classic, 10km Biathlon Sprint, 4x7.5km Biathlon relay with an additional military patrol race held at Divisional and Army championships. 5 RIFLES had a phenomenal start, winning the Infantry Championships. In a competition with nine infantry teams, we won three out the four races across the event.
Buoyed by our performance, we were confident moving into the divisional championships. Our pre-race routine consisted of arriving three hours early to test both skis and waxes, before preparing the skis for the race. This ultimately paid off with 5 RIFLES achieving one silver and three bronze medals in individual events at the Divisional Champs, whilst finishing in third place overall. This also provided the team with automatic qualification to the Army Championships.
The Army Championships were held at Rupholding and whilst this was a first
appearances for the team, we were confident. Most impressive was the development of
the junior Riflemen who now took it upon themselves to leave early each morning, testing skis and waxes before each race. The highlight arrived in the penultimate race, 4x7.5km Biathlon relay, where we managed a third-place finish after a remarkable 2nd leg from LCpl Rana who dropped only one shot. The Army Championships then culminated in a 30km military patrol race. The team is required to carry 40kg between them, including their individual weapon, be inspected by the Inspecting Officer, Lt Gen Ian Cave, before conducting a series of command tasks whilst navigating the 30km loop. There are two shoots, separated by 25km of skiing, with each
