Graham Colbeck, a member of our Wakefield Branch, put his artist skills to work to paint a portrait of our oldest KOYLI member Fred Adamson. The portrait is titled ‘The Veteran.’ Graham and Tim Humphreys, Secretary of Wakefield Branch, travelled to Fred’s home in Conisbrough in Doncaster to present Fred with the portrait. Fred and his family were amazed and cannot thank Graham enough for the gift.
York Minster Service
marking the anniversary of the death of Lieutenant General Sir John Moore
On the anniversary of the death of our founding father, Lieutenant General Sir
John Moore, a service was held in the Regimental Chapel within York Minster on in mid-January. 35 retired officers and former soldiers from The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, The Light Infantry, The Royal Green Jackets, and The Rifles and some partners gathered in the Regimental Chapel for the service. This was in addition to the service held later in the day at Sir John Moore’s tomb in London’s Saint Paul’s Cathedral.
It is the first time a service has been
held in York Minster and comes following a suggestion by Mr Paul Crompton from our Wakefield Branch that our Association hold a service at the memorial to Sir John Moore in the Regimental Chapel. It is fitting then that at the start of the service it was Paul Crompton who read the eulogy, the life of Sir John Moore.
The service was conducted by our Association Padre, Reverend Andrew Martlew TD with the reading by Mr Paul Chadwick
former 2LI, and Mr Hugh Goudge former RGJ read the Charles Wolfe poem “The Burial of Sir John Moore at Corunna”. Wreath layers were Major (Retd) Tim Crowther KOYLI, Mr Adrian Waites LI, Mr Stuart Anderson RGJ, and Mr Colin Cranswick Rifles. Buglers were Mr Kev Fawcett and Major (Retd) David Jarratt who brought the Minster to a standstill when they sounded Last Post and Reveille.
The service will now become an annual event in the north of England which we hope will be attended by Riflemen who cannot travel to the service in London.
Buglers were Mr

END OF AN ERA
Brigadier (Retd) Roger Prestson CBE stands down as a trustee
Brigadier (Retd) Roger Preston CBE stood down as a trustee
of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Association Trust in January. Brigadier Roger, commissioned in 1955 into The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI), is highly respected by his fellow officers and the soldiers who served under his command. He has been a stalwart of the association and the patriarch of the KOYLI Association, fitting therefore that he stood down in Minden House Pontefract, part of the original KOYLI Depot.
The trustees thanked Roger for his dedication to the Association, and for his wise council. The Minden House Buglers provided a fitting display of their bugle skills ending with “Jockey to the Fair” the KOYLI’s regimental march as a tribute to him. All members of the association send their best wishes to Roger and his wife Polly for the future. Cede Nullis.
