                                 ATR Winchester’s Evolutionary Journey: From CMS 21 Refine to CMS Future Soldier. Throughout the past year, Army Training Regiment (Winchester) (ATR (W)) has undergone substantial transformations. Transitioning from the Common Military Syllabus (CMS 21 Refine) to the CMS Future Soldier (CMS (FS)) initiative marked a pivotal shift. This transition aligns with the broader integration into the Soldier Academy, emphasising readiness for future military challenges. ATR (W) has welcomed nine recruit intakes during this period, showcasing the effectiveness of its training programmes. Despite a demanding schedule focused on both training and recruit engagement, ATR (W) maintains its unwavering commitment to excellence. The Regiment’s comprehensive curriculum encompasses basic soldiering skills, Adventurous Training (AT), sports, and international training, ensuring recruits receive top-tier preparation for their military careers.
Physical Development (PD) Team: A Year of Excellence and Adaptability. The PD Team at ATR (W) experienced significant changes during the 2023/24 period. New additions to the team, including WO2 (QMSI) Taylor from the Army School of Physical Training (ASPT) and Sgt (SI) Burrows fresh from his RAPTC Instructor’s Course, enhanced the team’s expertise. Sgt (SI) Dean-Netscher ’s arrival from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) further bolstered the team’s capabilities. Despite personnel changes, the PD team delivered outstanding results, earning commendations and recognition for their contributions. Their dedication ensures recruits receive top- quality training and support, setting a high standard for excellence.

Army Boxing Showdown: British Army Prevails Against German Bundeswehr. In October 2023, ATR (W) hosted an electrifying boxing event, pitting the British Army Boxing Team against their German Bundeswehr counterparts. This international clash featured nine intense bouts, with the British Army emerging victorious. Meticulous planning led by Capt (MAA) G Slade-Jones, supported by Cpl Lewis, ensured the event’s success. The PD Team, led by WO2 (QMSI) Taylor, played a crucial role in elevating the event, showcasing the soldiers’ resilience and skill both in and out of the ring.

ATR (W)’s Sporting Achievements. ATR (W)’s sporting prowess was highlighted by the British Army Warrior Fitness (BAWF) Female Team’s consecutive first-place finish in regional events, demonstrating dedication and teamwork under Bdr Grist’s leadership. In other activities, both male and female participants excelled in individual and team events, with WO2 (QMSI) Taylor clinching gold medals in Army and Inter-Service Diving Championships. The ATR (W) Football Team, captained by WO2 Hilditch, currently leads the South Regional Division 2, exemplifying the Regiment’s commitment to sporting excellence.
Adventurous Training in 23/24: A Year of Exploration and Resilience. Despite budget constraints, ATR (W) engaged in exciting AT experiences. From low-level multi-activity expeditions in Gibraltar to kayaking in Bavaria and rock climbing in Spain, soldiers embraced challenges and explored new horizons. Despite the hurdles, the spirit of adventure thrives at ATR (W), with soldiers pushing their limits and embracing the outdoors.
ATR Winchester’s External Support Efforts. Responding to the engage-to- recruit commitment, ATR (W) deployed training team members across various UK locations and overseas, contributing to increased recruit numbers. Specialized workshops and training initiatives, including support to overseas locations like Jordan, Kenya, Poland and Estonia, demonstrate ATR (W)’s commitment to recruitment and excellence.
