One of the
SIOs taking ITT PT
gym has worked hard to vary the training they undertake to make it challenging and specific, which is very different from the old run – circuit – TAB days. Thankfully, the programming is proving successful with an almost 100% pass rate on the RFT(S) for the ITTs.
The unit sits under LWC and to fall in line with the Director’s intent, we have
implemented and applied the phrase “Transition Towards The Threat” (T4) to all training. There are also several AAC Subsequent Trade Training (STT) courses conducted by the Regiment that have been reviewed to ensure there was adequate and arduous PT factored in. This is an area that the unit has been keen to get right to ensure all AAC qualified personnel are fit and ready for their roles tactically. With the war in Ukraine, the battle picture and threats are constantly evolving and therefore the training must keep in line with the changes. Many of my RAPTCI predecessors from here will recall the “Ridge Run”, a challenging Tactical PT session used on old cadre courses to test the mental resilience of the AAC Soldiers. This session is now back by popular demand and standardised for safety. It is now factored into all courses that come through the Regiment. One that is hated during it, but loved and discussed long after it’s over.
I will soon hand the baton over to my good friend WO2 (QMSI) Smudge Smith who is walking into a great Regiment and amazing gym team. I know that his personality will be perfect for this place, and I will continue to watch and admire this fantastic unit from afar.

Iam close to the end of my two-year assignment with this Initial Trade Training (ITT) Regiment. My time here
has been amazing, and the Army Air Corps (AAC) personnel have really welcomed me and fully embraced what the RAPTC brings to their training space. The unit sits within the Army Aviation Centre (AACen), which itself is ever growing with many small AAC lodger units, as well as being the home of HQ Army Air Corps within it. None of these units have an RAPTCI and therefore much of their PD input comes from myself and the amazing gym staff.
Given that the AACen is the home of the Air Corps, it was the ideal location to host their Corps Festival of Sport, and as the lead unit on station, the gym staff and I took the reins in organising this year’s event. Teams from all 7 AAC Regiments came to compete across 5 sporting events with 2 AAC being victorious and overall winners.
As this is a training regiment, there is a lot of focus on keeping PT relevant and current with policy and direction from Land Warfare Centre (LWC). The main PT output standard for Initial Trade Trainees (ITT) is the Role Fitness Test (Soldier) (RFT(S)). Although this is a basic test and easy for most, some of our ITTs are only 17 years old and not yet fully developed. The
