Located within the quaint village of Southwick on the outskirts of Portsmouth, the Defence School
of Policing and Guarding (DSPG) may appear serene, but within its confines lies a hive of activity. As I reflect on my first 12 months stationed here, it’s evident that DSPG is not to be underestimated, with a bustling schedule comprising over 50 sessions per week.
At DSPG, physical training is paramount, adhering to the Army Physical Training System (APTS) to enhance the readiness of future soldiers both mentally and physically. With a focus on preparing Tri- Service police soldiers and officers for non-Ground Close Combat (Non-GCC) Role Fitness Test (RFT), our training programme encompasses a blend of strength, aerobic and anaerobic tactical sessions, tailored to meet the demands of various Tri-Service assessments.
Despite the demanding schedule, opportunities for additional Physical

Development, Sport, and Adventurous Training Instructor (ATI) certifications are limited. However, when they arise, we capitalise on them, utilising nearby resources such as the Army Inshore Sail Training Centre (AISTC) on Thorney Island and the Joint Service Adventurous Training Sailing Centre (JSATSC) in Gosport. From Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) to Competent Crew Courses, these experiences not only diversify our training but also foster healthy camaraderie and morale within the team.
Amongst the rigors of daily physical training delivery, the DSPG Gym Staff on a regular basis orchestrates team- building exercises across the site, through co-ordinated Command Task afternoons, providing both military and civilian personnel with invaluable leadership development opportunities. Additionally, the Station Health and Wellness Fair, organised by the gymnasium department, was met with resounding success,

highlighting the importance of holistic well-being within all ranks.
However, across the seriousness of our daily battle rhythm, DSPG also knows how to embrace the lighter side of life. As 2023 drew to a close, we indulged in some festive cheer with traditional Christmas PT. It was a sight to behold as WO2 (QMSI) Woolridge donned his best turkey costume, showcasing his ‘dad bod’ with a Turkey Trot/Sprint – a moment of levity within our training environment.
In conclusion, DSPG stands as a testament to the dedication and resilience of our personnel. From the serene surroundings of Southwick to the adrenaline-fueled training sessions, each day brings new challenges and opportunities. As I look forward to the year ahead, I am confident that DSPG will continue to mould exemplary military police, prepared to uphold the values and standards across all three services.
