DEFENCE MEDICAL SERVICES WHITTINGTON – DMS(W)
DMS Whittington, 6 June 2023 to be precise, and another new chapter began for me, taking
over the reins from the now Capt (MAA) Trev Tuhey RAPTC. It was an extremely smooth transition, thanks to an invaluable handover setting me up perfectly. I was also very fortunate to inherit a dedicated team of PTIs hailing from the Army, RAF and RN. This is the first time I have worked with Tri-Service PTIs, and each has brought a unique set of skills and experiences, enriching the programme delivery for the phase two medical trainees across the three services. So, being a Tri- Service unit, there isn’t just Army Fitness Tests to focus on, which brings various challenges, ensuring each service has a programme suitable to achieve each of the output standards and with only four PTIs.
It has been an extremely busy period since I started here and outside of our routine business, the DMS(W) Gym department has played host to a variety of events, such as British Army Warrior Fitness (BAWF), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Training Camps, mountain biking and with SSgt (SSI) Jallow RAPTC hosting DOfit courses and RAPTC Briefing Days. One of the highlights of the year was another Overseas Sports Visit (OSV) to Cyprus, to compete in the Cyprus International 4 Day Running Challenge 2023. Pulling together two teams from a busy training establishment I felt was a huge success and I hope this will continue to be a fixture in the sporting calendar in the future.
Towards the end of the year, the festive spirit descended upon us, as the Gym team organised a Santa Dash across site. A light-hearted event but encouraged a huge number to get away from behind their desks in the HQ and brought everyone together prior to some well- deserved Christmas leave. As everyone donned their Santa hats and ran, walked, or jogged around camp, it marked a perfect end to the year.
In closing, it has been a busy but equally enjoyable time since starting here,
