Yet again, it’s been an incredibly busy year for the Combat Manoeuvre Centre (CMC) Bovington, delivering collective and mission specific training comprising 8-months of fundamentals, special-to-role training and operational partnering with an emphasis on Mounted Close Combat (MCC) and specialist Dismounted Close Combat (DCC).
The gymnasium team, consisting of military personnel, civil servants & Babcock contractors, have performed admirably in facilitating and delivering physical training (PT) to a diverse cohort of soldiers and officers from numerous cap badges. The demand encompasses up to 18 physical training programmes across the Garrison and for such a small team is undoubtedly a challenging endeavour. To highlight and reward the dedication demonstrated, several Commander ’s Coins have been awarded to the team, most notably a 1* commendation awarded to Mr Osborn by Brigadier N Cowley OBE, Commander CMC, for outstanding service.
But there’s more than PT, and true to the Army’s values and standards the team stand firm in supporting internal and external events of their own volition. Notably supporting the Little Troopers charity, who supports children of serving personnel within the Armed Forces. The team also actively supports and participates in sporting and adventurous training activities from triathlons to rock climbing and willingly seize opportunities the Army offers. Exercise HODSON’S HORSE, an event compromising of a variety of sports and spearheaded by the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) was re-introduced for the first time since Covid-19.

Coinciding with the RAC Sports Awards Dinner was the boxing finals. Diligently organised and impeccably executed by the RAC Corps SM and a member our team, Mr Maunder. Highly anticipated, the event was nothing short of outstanding and intensely exhilarating due to the competitors exuding tremendous skill, steadfast courage, and enduring tenacity.
We also send our best wishes to Cpl Gutteridge who is soon to leave us and begin his Corps journey after successfully negotiating RAPTC Selection in January this year. If you’re ever visiting the local area, absolutely pop into the gymnasium for a brew.
But that’s enough from me, Lt Col Rimmer is a staunch supporter of our team here at CMC Bovington and a fervent advocator of all things physical, he has kindly provided a statement from a CO’s perspective.

Lt Col JSH Rimmer RTR Commanding Officer The Royal Armoured Corps Training Regiment – “The PT Staff in Bovington have been instrumental in reviving and reinforcing a vastly improved approach to the Physical Training and Mental Resilience of RAC Officers and Soldiers. The training they deliver is routinely exceptional, well planned and executed. We have seen a real time improvement in RFT(S) first time pass rates, overall physical conditioning of Permanent Staff, and a more robust approach to maintaining physical standards. We have been brilliantly supported by the QMSI and his team of both military and civilian instructors – and there is more to come”.
