JOINT SERVICE MOUNTAIN TRAINING WING (BALLACHULISH)
It’s been another great year of delivery for the Ballachulish Wing of JSMTC, in which we marked the 50th anniversary
of the JSAT scheme. The Wing has been fortunate that the in-year savings measures didn’t directly affect our delivery and, therefore, our steady drumbeat of courses and overseas concentrations continued. This has seen the team deployed across the globe, supporting and delivering AT courses to a large number of Service Personnel (SP).
We’ve experienced some significant changes within the Wing. We bid farewell to WO2 Glen Charlton, who has departed on promotion to HQ RAPTC, and welcomed WO2 Ross Penver into the Wing Sgt Major’s chair. Additionally, the kitchen and dining area underwent a complete rebuild, including the addition of a mezzanine level. This has provided us with another much-needed classroom space. We’ve also added another drying room, which has proven its worth during the winter months.

As I step into my last 12 months as the OC, I look forward to another busy programme of Concentrations and several changes amongst the delivery staff.
WING SERGEANT MAJOR – ‘HAS LEFT THE BUILDING’ WO2 (QMSI) G Charlton RAPTC
After a long stint working within Army Adventurous Training, I can honestly say I still haven’t been issued a woolly hat... I started my ATI journey at the Army AT Wing Inverness from 2013-15, which at the time was in its infancy, before moving to Indefatigable between 2015-2018, followed by the Bavarian Wing 2018-2021. The stars almost aligned for Oman, all but Polaris, so I headed North, where I took on the role of Wing Sergeant Major (WSM) Ballachulish 2021-2024. Having the privilege to be a WSM at such a high- profile Wing has been a real honour and I am grateful to have worked alongside the ‘Balahooligan’ team. I will now hand over the axe to WO2 (QMSI) Ross Penver
The staff managed to complete a full traverse of the Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye
Ex CANICE – Canmore, Canada
and embark on a new journey with HQ RAPTC, where I will take on the role of SMI Training Development Team (TDT). But before I do, here are a few images of my top highlights.
