HEADQUARTERS BRITISH FORCES CYPRUS
1ST BATTALION THE DUKE OF LANCASTER’S REGIMENT
My first year serving with 1st Battalion the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (1 LANCS) in Cyprus
as the Resident Infantry Battalion (RIB), it became clear that I had to hit the ground running and continue the vigorous battle rhythm the Battalion had ahead of them. My first day in work also welcomed a new Commanding Officer, marking the beginning of a transformative period and setting high standards from the start.
One of the initial challenges was the current standings in the Commander British Forces’ (CBF’s) Sports Cup, an annual competition consisting of several sporting and/or physical events throughout the year. Starting from behind, the new leadership swiftly ignited a resurgence in sporting prowess. Through dedication, hard work and a renewed competitive spirit, 1 LANCS rallied to claim the victory in the CBF’s Sports Cup 2023, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Regular visits to the Happy Valley training area became a cornerstone of the Battalion’s physical development. Here, emphasis was placed not only on physical fitness but also on mental resilience, pushing Kingsmen to their limits and fostering a culture of strength and endurance.
Another highlight of the year was the hosting of the St Helen’s Rugby League

first team for a pre-season training camp. This collaboration provided a unique opportunity for the Battalion’s rugby team to train alongside seasoned professionals and develop through priceless coaching and mentoring by the coaches. In return, the Battalion delivered a day training

package, consisting of Basic Infantry Skills, escape & evasion from Military Working Dogs and a gruelling 5-mile stretcher race in teams as part of a casualty evacuation scenario. Both sides gained ample knowledge and experience from the training camp and will become an annual partnership.
Looking ahead, the focus for 1 LANCS shifts towards a significant transition – the unit’s relocation back to the UK in Aug 2024. Weeton Bks, near Blackpool, will be the new home for the Battalion, presenting both opportunities and challenges for the soldiers. While the allure of the local beach may not match the sun-kissed shores of Cyprus, the move symbolises a return to familiar territory and a chance for new beginnings.
