Training Establishments, HQ RAPTC and now the Field Army. From sitting behind a desk doing all things Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) to delivering the Physical Training Programme and preparing the world’s oldest tank regiment for Operational Readiness has significantly broadened my experience and knowledge as an RAPTCI.
On arrival to RTR in October 2023 marked the beginning of a whirlwind journey as I quickly immersed myself in understanding the Unit and its various Sqns. The Regiment’s pivotal role in supporting the wider Field Army became evident as I delved into Unit life and its processes. With the Unit recently returning from Op CABRIT, it was a critical time for the Regiment to reset and refocus. As the build up to Christmas leave approached, I was straight into the mix with the Regimental Boxing night that proved to be a resounding success, fostering camaraderie and esprit de corps among the soldiers. Prior to Christmas the Regiment rekindled its competitive spirit by participating in the Cambrai Sports Competition, which culminated with the rugby and football finals being played on Cambrai Day. Cambrai Day is an annual commemoration that honours the British soldiers who fought in the Battle of Cambrai during World War 1. It was significant because it was the first ever large-scale use of tanks in warfare. The RTR, formed in 1917, played a crucial role in the battle and has since become part of the Armoured Corps of the British Army. Cambrai Day holds special significance for the Regiment as it commemorates its heritage and honours the soldiers who fought bravely during the conflict.

CO’s PT Lesson on Tidworth Training Area
Following a rejuvenating break over the Christmas period, the Regiment returned ready to take on the challenges of 2024. For many of the Sqns, first up was deploying to Castlemartin Ranges to conduct low- level individual, crew and troop training, leading up to the Annual Crew Test and finishing with Live Fire Tactical Training (LFTT) which see a pair of Challenger Two tanks moving down range and engaging with targets with their 120mm main and 7.62 Coax (chain gun).
On completion of Castlemartin Ranges everyone returned to sunny Tidworth to prepare for Exercise LINOTYPER in Poland. RTR are providing rear support to 12 Brigade over the course of 2 months from April to June. In addition to tank preparation, there was a concerted effort to ensure the readiness of everyone which
included completion of Individual Training Requirements (ITRs) including the Soldier Conditioning Review (SCR), Role Fitness Test (RFT) and Military Swimming Test (MST). This ensured everyone was fully deployable and prepared for the exercise.
For the remainder of 2024 I will be revitalising the Hobart Shield Competition which has been dormant since 2019. This will involve the Sqns earning points to towards the overall leaderboard through a series of competitive events vying for the title of overall winners. Back with a bang will be the 2024 Boxing Competition which, if all goes to plan, will see the night being held under canvas on the Parade Square for the first time.
