52 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL LANCERS Corporals’ Mess
The change as a consequence of amalgamation was particu- larly noticeable in the Corporals’ Mess. The 9th/12th Royal Lancers had previously placed a lot of emphasis on their Corpo- rals’ Mess, while the QRL less so. Upon amalgamation, despite it being a very busy year since 2nd May, The Royal Lancers’ Corporals’ Mess has constantly strived to make itself better and more active, accepting the history and traditions of both ante- cedent regiments.
Starting with the Tercentenary, the Mess opened on the Friday. Attended by the younger members of the OCA, the night was enjoyed by all. Many toasts where made towards the old and new Regiments. Probably not the best start before Babington Shield Athletics for the ne athletes that are in the Mess.
Moving onto the Peto Cup and Regimental boxing, a ne night of pugilism was had by all. Mess members looked dapper in their new mess dress. Guest appearances from Amir Khan and Ross “The Boss” Birkenshaw made it a night to remember. Following the boxing, the Mess was opened to the boxers and members to have a beer together. It was a pleasure for all to see A Squadron win on the night.
Christmas soon came upon us. Eighties fancy dress ended up being the order of the day. Effort put into costumes was mixed. A good band, mediocre comedian and a good night was had by all. Some kissing of the wrong people in the photo booth, to a dodgy prize draw and many more events that shouldn’t be men- tioned. If anyone had thought that there was divide in the mess, the Christmas party showed that we were all of one company. Thanks to HQ squadron for organising the event.
Whilst the Regiment has been busy, there has been a hard core of members who are a constant feature of the Mess. With the Mess opening some Thursday nights, these individuals have been a constant feature, making use of the mess and showing what it can be.
The Mess has had various improvements carried out in the last ten months; a new ‘stud wall’ to separate the Fondouk Rooms from the Mess, new coffee table toppers to commemorate our antecedent regiments and a decent collection of memorabilia to remind us of our glorious history. Pieces commemorating the lives of Stephen Allbutt, Bill Leaming, and Paul Watkins having a prime place for all to see.
The Mess is becoming a nice place to visit, have a coffee or a beer or use for meetings. The improved security has made it pos- sible for us to nally display items of silver to commemorate our history. With the added encouragement of WO1 RSM Cassidy and the continued support of WO1 RSM Borthwick, the Mess will continue to grow and become more active; a place for the ‘screws’ of the Regiment to do work of ine.
As the Regiment grows as one the Mess will continue to go from strength to strength and become an integral part of the Regi- ment. Why promote to Sgt when the Corporals Mess is the life and soul of the party? Despite this, heartfelt congratulations to those members who have moved up the road or gone onto civil- ian life.
