A team of 5 staff and 10 officer cadets deployed to North Wales to embark on a 7-day climbing exercise. Half of the team were beginners to climbing and gained their climbing foundation qualification. The other half were working towards preparing for their climbing instructor course.
OCdts were split into 3 sections
and given various roles to encourage team bonding during the exercise. Accommodation was in a civilian campsite. Each section took turns producing a group meal come dine with
me style. In my totally unbiased opinion, the barbecue by 1 Section was the best.
Cadets experienced climbing at 4 different locations across North Wales
to encompass a variety of rock types and difficulty levels. Holyhead Mountain was a highlight, with a fantastic cliffside café at the bottom to enjoy after a long day of climbing. It must also be a military favourite as we bumped into a group from Sandhurst whilst climbing there.
“I had never rock climbed before, nor taken part in any adventurous training with CUOTC - however the climbing
foundation course is a definite must if you can. Professional instructors, great people, and challenging myself daily culminated in an amazing week as the highlight of my Summer. Not only did
I gain a qualification, but also made great friends and earned money for my time. As a first insight into AT with the OTC, I’m excited to further my skills and challenge and push myself further with more courses and more personal development.” – OCdt Friend, Juniors
