AOSB Insight
One of the aims of the University OTC is to help develop the leadership skills of Officer Cadets. The type of person the unit attracts tends to be those who want to strive for leadership roles in the future, whether that be in the military of in the civilian sector. This year, the unit ran Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB) ‘taster’ days as well as online sessions to help OCdts build on their leadership skills.
The in-person days involved an introduction to the AOSB fitness tests, planning exercise lessons, interview preparation and tailored feedback. As a result of the covid pandemic, virtual sessions were also run. These included sessions on the planning exercises, mental aptitude tests and military knowledge.
All events were well attended by OCdts and individuals from other
units who were at different stages of army selection. They gave an informal insight into the selection process and the attributes assessed. The sessions were mainly taught by OCdts who had recently been successful at AOSB so it was an open environment to answer any
queries and show that everyone in the unit is capable of being successful at Westbury.
Moving forward, the unit hopes to run the in person AOSB insight days termly to support more OCdts through Westbury. Even those who do not have an active application are encouraged to
attend and develop other transferable skills, such as practicing interviews. Special thanks go to Major Bevin and external staff who helped organize the day and provided interview practice.
