 Life after CUOTC
What do you want to do after university? Just as with school, and with most stages of your life, it always seems to be as soon as you start something, you’re already being questioned... What’s
next ?
In all honesty, there is nothing wrong with not knowing the answer. Even now, a year into my career, it’s a question I am still being asked, and I still can’t answer. If you’re in this situation, the most beneficial thing to do is keep opening doors. This is precisely what OTC will do for you.
Of course, there is the highly obvious career path following from OTC, going into the Army. Although an incredibly
rewarding career, it may not suit everyone. I would recommend, that even if you have little intention on joining, the application process will still be highly beneficial; and is something I regret not seeing through while I had the time as a student.
When you do start applying for jobs, experience is one of the most sought- after attributes, alongside education. This is why the majority of interview questions are along the lines of “can you give me an example of...” ; generally being followed with key words out of their role description, such as “Team Work”, “Leadership”, and “Showing your Initiative”.
What OTC will do for you, is provide an array of examples to use. Whether it’s leading a section attack, running
a lesson/presenting, or organising an event. These are transferable skills you can take to most professions, and the fact you are practising them now, can help you stand out above the crowd.
