PGS is a test of your ability to turn accurately and maintain speed by taking the racing line through a downhill course marked by red and blue flags. After the initial knockout round, each
pair of riders race twice, once on each side of the course. The competition was tough this year and made even more challenging by the very real risk of crashing out on one of the tight turns.
SBX is a game of nerve. To maintain maximum speed over bumps and tight bends, you must resist the urge to ‘check’ your speed or put in any unnecessary turns. The degree of challenge for the open riders was increased by including a tricky series of deep troughs and jumps at the start. Small mistakes in this event can be hard to recover from and resulted in some surpris- ing victories in both novice and experienced categories.
ExSS19 is open to all Officers and Soldiers of the RA. It offers novices the chance to chal- lenge themselves for the first time and allows those with previous experience the chance to compete at a much higher standard. This year, with the new European Winter Sports DIN down- grading snowboarding to a category two sport, numbers were reduced to 52 riders, down from 120 the year before. Finally, I would like to thank The Sandhurst Trust for providing financial assis- tance to the young officers on this exercise.
