Exercise ARRAMPICARA CADET
The day after the Sovereign’s Parade, four Officer Cadets from across the Intermedi- ate Term embarked upon a 27 hour journey across Europe, crossing through France, Austria and Germany before making it into Italy, finish- ing their journey at the mountain town of Cortina D’Ampezzo, nestled in the Venetian Alps and not far from the battlefields of the First World War.
For the next week they would be led by two very experienced climbing instructors, on a series of multi-pitch climbing routes taking them to the peak of mountains in the area. The first day was some straightforward single pitch

The next day saw a climb in a similar area, but a mountain or two across from the first. A quick route down was taken to avoid the incoming rain, enabling us to get back to the town in time to explore the shops for local produce with which to cook our own
Italian-inspired cuisine.
The fourth day of climbing was the biggest, as we attempted a 15 pitch ascent in the Punta
climbs, followed by abseil tech-
niques back down, to ensure eve-
ryone was at the same level and
had the basic skills required for
the following week. The next day
saw an ascent of eight pitches up
to the peak of the Hexansteine
South Arrette, from which an excellent view of the Dolomites was possible, before a journey back down through the – now century old – trenches and bunkers of the First World War.
