assist current and former Officer Cadets, but also to spread the Sandhurst brand and the importance of Serve to Lead.
In the last edition of this journal, I trailed an evolv- ing story of Sandhurst, developing our position and role on the world stage, as well as at home, whilst maintaining a focus on the world-class training that we pride ourselves on. The re-cre- ation of a full-time Commandant at Sandhurst reflects the recognition of our importance in the coming years and prepares us well.
I will shortly handover the role of Commandant, after nearly 5 years in post and, whilst I shall be immensely sad to leave, I am hugely privileged to be able to finish my Army service where it began 34 years ago. I shall leave with many happy memories and great pride in all the staff and Officer Cadets with whom I have had the privilege to Serve to Lead.
I very much hope that you enjoy this Wish Stream!
 Brigadier James Carr-Smith
Commander Sandhurst Group
On commissioning from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, James Carr-Smith joined an armoured regiment, initially the
5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and then, on amalgamation, the Royal Dragoon Guards. His early years were spent in a variety of com- mand and staff appointments in Germany, Northern Ireland, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Poland.
More recent staff appointments have included: Military Assistant to the Chief of the General Staff; SO1 Organisation & Plans at Headquarters Land Command; Chief Plans in Multi-National Division (South East) in Iraq; Assistant Head Land at the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre; Assistant Director Army 2020 Implementation at Army HQ; and, most recently, Military Attaché and Head of the British Army Staff in the USA.
He commanded an Armoured Squadron and an Armoured Regiment; his tenure in the lat- ter role included an out-of-role operational tour in Afghanistan. And, as a Brigadier, he was the inaugural Deputy Commander of 1 (UK) Div dur- ing its transition from the armoured to light role.
He is a graduate of the Higher Command and Staff Course. He has also attended the US Cap- stone Course.
He assumed the appointment of Commander Sandhurst Group in September 2019.
James is married to Isabel and they have three adult children. He enjoys all ball sports, particu- larly cricket, hockey, tennis and squash. He used to play cricket at a high level (Combined Services & Army) but now he plays purely for fun. He also enjoys reading, cooking and travelling.
