Exercise TREK LES GETS

Swiftly after CC183’s Sovereign’s Parade on Friday 9th August, we mustered for our final checks and boarded a bus to Heathrow
Airport. After a short flight, we arrived in Geneva and picked up our hire cars. We then began the hour-long drive across the border into the French Alps. It wasn’t long before we had arrived at our accommodation, Chalet Pilotan, on the outskirts of Les Gets.
we had a hearty Bolognese back at the chalet in preparation for our first day of walking.
First Day
The smell of eggs and bacon drifting upstairs in the morning was easily enough to lure a bunch of sleepy OCdts from their beds. After OCdt Blount, our instructor, explained the day’s route
to everyone, we set off from the cha- let with the intention of reaching the top of Mont Chéry within a couple of hours. On a clear day we would have had a fantastic view of Mont Blanc from the top; however, the cloud cover meant we didn’t quite get the views we were looking for. We then dropped down the south-
ern ridge before turning right into the woods and descending to the Col d’Encrenaz, where we had lunch on the terrace of a small ‘auberge’. The afternoon’s walking consisted of climbing back up the path through the woods and over the top of Mont Caly, before finally descending
Despite initial excitement, the
tiredness of another term at
Sandhurst soon caught us up,
so we headed to bed for a good
night’s rest. The next morning,
however, we were raring to go
again, exploring the delights of
the ‘Super U’ supermarket in Taninges, where we did a good job of making a healthy dent in our CILOR funds on the food shop. We spent the remainder of the afternoon walking from the accommodation into the centre of Les Gets so everyone could practice their French for the first time and get a feel for the town. That evening
