Mid-week
Our instructor had briefed everyone that Tues- day’s excursion would be one of the most tax- ing of the week. The prize was the summit of the Roc d’Enfer, which translates to the Rock of Hell – although we were assured that it wasn’t quite as treacherous as the

Our final day on the mountains promised to be a beautiful one, as we woke to perfect blue skies, which was a great relief to everyone after a few days of rather patchy weather. After a big break- fast of scrambled eggs, pain au chocolat and
more watermelon, we hopped in the cars towards the car park at the bot- tom of the Foron valley. The climb to the summit of the Pointe de Chalune was the steepest we had encoun- tered so far, but the team had clearly found their walking legs thanks to the previous few days exploits, and we made it to the top in double quick time. The views from the top were
spectacular, with Praz de Lys dropping away to our south, and right in front of us we could see the Roc d’Enfer which we had climbed just a few days before. Before long the wind got up and we decided to head down to find a little creperie tucked away on the side of the mountain where we had a wonderful late-lunch and a few carafes of rosé to wash it all down. A great way to end the week!

late cereal), boiled eggs and
watermelon we drove to the Col
d’Encrenaz, where we had had
lunch the day before, which would
be our start point for the day.
The ascent to the summit of the
mountain (2244m) via Col Raty
took a total of about three hours, with some peo- ple adjusting more naturally to the altitude than others. The summit offered 360-degree pano- ramic views stretching out over the Alps, with the previously hidden Mont Blanc to the south and Lake Geneva to the north. The descent started with a steep rocky path before it evened out into rolling pasture with the mountains towering on either side of us. We then dropped down into the Foron valley before returning to the cars at
