Our Cornish adventure started on a balmy 25°C Monday morning; eight members of the RMAS SSU department loading our
freshly acquired van and double cab with all the necessary provisions needed for our five days camping in Newquay, Cornwall.
Cpl Halsall, our AT leader, had organised three activities that would test us all both physically and mentally. We had sea kayaking on day one, day two was mountain biking, and day three saw us coasteering the Cornish Coastline.

packed lunch. After lunch we turned north and paddled up the coastline, before returning as the light was fading to pack our equipment away and drive a now tired and sleepy lot of soldiers back to camp.
Mountain biking started in the ancient Forest Park of Lanhydrock, where we picked up our sturdy cycling machines and met our instruc- tor for the day. After teaching us the basics of cycling and testing our balance skills with a fun but competitive game, we were biking!
Our sea kayaking day began after an hour spent navigating a van through the small cobbled streets of Fowey village. We unloaded our kayaks in the glorious sunshine and after a quick safety brief and equip- ment check... we were slipping into the cool waters of the river Fowey.
After lunch we tackled some hills that left us gasping...
We started slowly on some begin- ner single tracks through the amaz- ing forested landscape whilst eve- ryone built up some confidence; after an hour it was a struggle to get the members to slow down as we whipped through the trees, around berms and over man made jumps. We cycled 30km over the span of
Once clear of the river mouth we spent the morning hugging the coastline where we saw some spectacular sea caves, stunning white sand beaches and the sleek hulls of passing yachts. Our instructor had us navigating through narrow rocky inlets, which saw many a kayak capsize, much to the delight of everyone else who hadn’t just been dunked into frigid water. After a morning of learning kayak skills and res- cue techniques, we pulled up into a secluded beach and were able to enjoy a tasty and filling
this fun, but tiring, day with a lunch stop at a quaint cottage shop in the middle of a forest clearing. After lunch we tackled some hills that left us gasping but ultimately ended with some breath-taking views over valleys entwined with free-flowing rivers. After packing up and hand- ing back our equipment we started the 45minute journey back to camp, with everyone really look- ing forward to dinner – an authentic Nepalese Curry that some of our members where gracious enough to prepare.
