A GLANCE AT THE PAST
1900’s. They are shown under restoration to working order in 2008 (opposite page), part of the towns’ 800th celebration of receiving a market charter from King John.
There are a number of memorials, both inside the church and outside, commemorating the lives of local worthies. On the outside of the north side of the tower (facing the Sunday School Hall) is a stone tablet remembering Elizabeth Eland (1789 - 1845), whilst inside the church are other plaques to the Eland family including George (1753 – 1833) and Elizabeth (1765 – 1836). Although they lived before photography, their representations exist and are shown; George and Elizabeth as cut-out silhouettes, whilst the picture of Elizabeth is on a glass photographic plate taken of a miniature oil painting from the early 1800’s,
both of which are in my archives.
I also have in my archives about
70 photographs of Victorian and
Edwardian residents of the town.
When the church is
finally allowed to open
again the hope is to
have a celebration of
800 years of St James’
church, where I will
have these and other
old pictures of both the
church and town on display. Watch this space for details when they become known.
