A recent indicator proving the strange times in which we live was a small newspaper article covering the cancellation of the Queen’s summer garden parties for 2021. A more positive bit of news is that 2022 brings
a further Jubilee year, 70 years after the Queen’s accession to the throne.
The West Region’s experience is similar with activities, sometimes linked to battle honours, being cancelled for a second succes-
sive year. Realism, pragmatism and restrictions underpin these decisions and we hope that a full calendar of activity within Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol and Somerset will be possible in the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee year. Plans have already been announced
for two days of Bank Holiday on the 2nd and 3rd June 2022 enabling a long weekend. Meanwhile from May 2021 we shall all be urged to plant a tree as a part the ‘Queen’s Green Canopy Project.’
It is important to look ahead and plan for better times. The articles within the contribu- tion from the West reflect several aspects that are essential to sustaining regimental life. The Rifles brand is clearly important to successful recruiting but there are other aspects that help to build the necessary foundation within each county. Indeed the people within our individual counties are fundamental to the building and maintenance of our regimental reputation and recruitment. In this edition of The Bugle various aspects of our family links are explored.
